|
|
this may be completely out of the question (or maybe its been done to death, i dunno! lol) but has anyone considered transplanting the 1.8T audi TT/golf GTI engine in to a 924? 225bhp out of the box and all the modern tricks and reliability?! And an easy 300bhp with a few mods!
Again, I may be talking fantasy but it is a popular conversion over here in the uk for mk1/2 golfs (VW rabbits to you guys maybe?) and seems to be a pretty universal engine - bearing in mind the 924's audi/VW engineering.
Any thoughts? _________________ 1980 924LUX |

isnt the golf5 a transversal mounted engine ?....dunno...it would fit...but with mods to mounting...electrics and drive line.
a gti engine or a TT engine would cost as much as a 951 engine....i dont see why swap to VW or Audi when there are Porsche options. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

225bhp out of the box (on baby boost) and about 20 years newer in design - but perhaps like you say the problems would outweigh the benefits? transverse mounting shouldnt matter i wouldn't think? main problem would be mating to the bell housing i suspect - as I have just realised the 924 engine is mounted at that wacky angle, something you couldnt do to the 1.8T engine unless you had special sump modifications etc.
Im not particularly clued up on the 931 engine - as to what power can be had for what cost. What boost do they run as standard? as 177bhp from a 2.0 turbo isnt mind blowing, bearing in mind a ford escort RS turbo runs 135bhp on the same bosch k-jet and 7psi boost on a wee 1600 lump (and was designed around the same time in history). _________________ 1980 924LUX |

There's a engine swap forum at the bottom of the forum list....
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before...... _________________ Ryan Moone

Mounts are all wrong. You have to cut the whole mounting assembly out of the VW donor car, and weld in brackets to support the mounts.
The bellhousing pattern is different. You can modify the 924 bellhousing and clutch, which is probably the easiest way of doing it, or you can chop up a VW tranny to do it... Good luck with the latter. Modifying the 924 bellhousing involves extensive fabrication, machining and welding.
Wiring is completely different. CIS vs Motronic IIRC. It's all there though, nothing too complicated just tedious.
Other than that, simple and easy as swaps get _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

LOL unfortunately my hot-hatch would show my grown-up car the way home every day of the week
but i cant help but think the 924 might be a pretty good base for a project, hence the questions and that 1.8T engine seems to be proving itself in all sorts of vehicles. _________________ 1980 924LUX |

My wife's TT 1.8T makes 225 hp stock and can make almost 300 with a different chip and 93 octane (US Pumps). _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
