My 88 924S has a loud whiney tranny. It howels and growls at low speed, and sounds like a jet fighter at speed. It is getting cold around here and I am looking to change the fluid with something more apt to the cold and something that will quiet the gear howl. Any suggestions?

I would also be interested in opinions for a good winter oil for this car. For cold starts at freezing to slightly below zero.

I use Redline MT90 (synthetic 75W90) gear oil in all of mine.

Start looking for another tranny......especially if you find a lot of metal in the oil.

no metal, just noise. The sound has not gotten any worse ever, just the same old whine. it is the loudest when I let my foot off the accelerator.

Just drain and replace the trans fluid first. You could be running low, and the oil that's in there could be shot. Buy yourself one of these:
http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/transaxlesocket.php

...get yourself a hand pump, and then 4 qts of synthetic 75w90 gear oil (either Mobil 1 or Redline). The trans actually takes less than 3 qts, but it's hard to get the last inch or so out of the bottom of the container, so it's a good idea to have some extra on hand.

Also, when you remove the plugs (there are two of them), take out the top one first (the filler plug), then remove the lower one (the drain plug). This is so if you for some reason bugger up the hex head as you're removing the plug, you don't end up screwing yourself!

Your pinion gear could be causing the noise.

I've used Swepco 80W90 gear lube in the trans with good results. They advertise quite frequently in Pano. I like it because it doesn't stiffen up the shifting in the cold weather and was noticably smoother in warm. Just before I switched I used Amsoil and the Swepco was noticably better. In the engine I use Mobil 1 and am experimenting with 10W30 now rather than the 15W50 I used in the past.

do you still have the sound deadening mat under the carpet in the hatch? I found when I removed that mat, the tranny was extremely loud.

I already changed the tranny oil. I used Penzoil 80 90 gl5. The sound remained the same after the change. I do have a sound deadening foam mat in my trunk.
Interestingly, the gearshifts on these cars are hollow, suspended on square rubber washers. This is a sound deadening feature. I turned a new knob out of Ash Hardwood on my lathe, and installed it. It amplified the noise greatly. However, the noise was amply noticeable before that.
