Let's get some theory going here. we know that 52mm offset wheels go great on the front of a 924, but we still need a spacer in the rear, right?
So if someone was to get a set of custom wheels made, wouldn't it make sense to fit the rear wheels with slightly less backspacing and not need a spacer? _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

If you don't have that spacer the wheels will rub the inner fender wall. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

If you're using the wheels as is, yes, but that spacer is there to compensate for the wheels not being the perfect fitment, unless I'm completely missing something here...
If you moved the hub mating surface of the wheel inward and the outer rim of the wheel further out, would this not accomplish the exact same thing?
I've had a killer offer on getting BBS RS wheels customized, and I'm giving it serious thought. The 5x130 BBS RS wheels are only available in offsets to fit the older 911 turbo and 944, but I love the style. I can specify to the wheel builder exact backspacing requirements for any offset and width that I would like. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

My guess-would be is -that it depends on which model year rear suspension you are running. Different trailing arms, different rims (no spacer required)
I`d say, look for an 87 924s (and up) rear suspension. You`d probably find a rim that would suit your taste.......Unless....you want to go all out custom.
You can find someone that will and can, make any rim you want.
But what are the setup costs (for one of a kind)? If someone wants to make a run.....maybe, and depends on how many can get sold. I could go on and on, but unless its cheap to do...I dunno
Change out the 471 and go the other route.
You know. The one I mentioned above.

You arent`t missing anything, and if you can get a good deal on someone putting a set of 4 matching rims together...go for it.
How fat of a tire do you want? To do what you want do, will move the whole tire outward. Unless you get a wider rim and a fatter tire

I'm waiting for a good deal on a set of 924s alloy trailing arms actually, they'll end up in the car eventually. Part of my plan for ditching the trailing arms and making a new tubular aluminum rear suspension crossmember. Weight savings and easy ride height adjustment, as well as easy swapping of springs.
Anyone who has removed those steel trailing arms before knows how much they weigh. Good lord is all I can say.
The RS wheels are three piece, the guy I know does custom fitments for VW wheels, in sizes from 15-18", all sorts of widths and so on. VW guys are crazy about their wheels, and they have this bizarre fascination with Porsche and BBS wheels.
I'm going to play around with my car a bit and see what I can figure out... _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Plans sound good.
I have a set of alloy trailing arms. I`m going to use one of these days. Kind of excited on the different possiblities with the p-line rims I can go with. If I could only afford the ones I`d like to get. (Maybe it would be cheaper to get a set of custom rims made... ) |
