Little muffler?

Does anyone know what that little cylinder is that looks like a miniature muffler? You can see it in this picture right by #6 and #7:

I'm guessing it might be a resonator or something, because having two mufflers like that seems pointless. It's rusted away right at the seam where the exhaust pipe goes into it on my car and it's really loud.

Its a resonator...I have never understood the purpose. I removed mine when I built my exhaust.
