Can I drill the trim for a spoiler?
I have heard yes and no...Do the mtg bolts go thru the trim AND glass?? or just the trim? If thru the glass can I drill with a diamond drill? Any other mounting methods, glue, etc?
Thanks

I drilled the trim of my hatch, just drill to the outer edge. It is my opinion that if you hit the glass while drilling that the glass will shatter.DOH!!

My 77 1/2 spoiler was an aftermount and
some of the holes are a little close to the edge but the instalion looks fine .Mine is off right now for painting, and oh ya - DON'T
touch da tempered glass! It will plug your
vacum cleaner.

| Do not try to use a diamond or glass drill on safety glass. It will shatter immediately. You can drill some sheet or blown glass, but not safety glass. |

I have drilled the glass hatch but only one hole. It took forever and it was too scary to do the others. Find a 944 hatch.
If you don't really car we recently glued two very wide rear fenders on a 944 with a two part epoxy that is good for metal to fiberglass but is a bit expensive. Worked great on the car and might be good to glue the spoiler to the glass.
If you are near NY I have the 924 glass you can have or test on.
Come pick it up. |

| I mounted one on my 77 glass. Since the holes had to be drilled closer to the edge of the trim in order to miss the glass, I didn't use the original holes in the spoiler. There is a metal strip that is at least an inch wide, inside the spoiler (mine is a 931 spoiler). The factory original holes are centered on this strip. I lined up the spoiler and drilled new holes up through my hatch trim and into that metal strip inside the spoiler, then I just used sheet metal screw to attach everything. So far it seems to be very solid |

Thats what I was planning on doing, and that was exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks alot!!!
Did you use any sealer between the spoiler and the trim?? I was wondering if I should use silicone or some foam tape?

I didn't use any sealer, but that might be a good idea. I guess I'd better point out that I did this on a project car that has not been driven at highway speed yet, only around the neighborhood, so although the spoiler FEELS very well attached, I won't know for sure till I get the car on the road and driven at 60 mhp (hopefully this spring). Also, I was able to use the original screws on the side strips without hitting the glass. Good Luck!
