I had a very successful day on the 924 today. Installed a CD player and was pleased to learn that someone in the past has put some excellent speakers in so sound quality is pretty good . I also added an extra earth lead from the battery to engine block which seems to have cleared up some of my electrical problems - the passenger electric mirror now works but drivers still doesnt and the fuel gauge seems to have stopped jumping about. I also installed a new clock as the old one didnt work.

However I now have a few more questions. First off, I have a number of loose wires that i dont know the function of!

First, these 2 purple ones, they run down the drivers side sill from the back of the car but are not plugged into anything up front as you can see!

Second, this plug that is protruding from the fuze box! Sorry its a poor picture but i hope someone can recognise this?

Third, 2 wires again hanging from around the fuse box area - i have identified these as the electric ariel cables, however im unsure how/where to power them from?

fourth, this blue wire that has clearly been added by someone over the years as it doesnt appear to be an original wire. It runs between the 2 headlights and i accidentally broke it (got caught in the light lifting mechanism). However i havent noticed anything not working since it broke.

Fifth, another blue wire running down the drivers side from the bulkhead towards the headlight - this has never been connected:

If anyone can give me any pointers on any of these I would be most grateful.
Also, I dont get any electrical power to the lights/radio etc until the 2nd click on the ignition barrel - is this normal for these cars? seems a bit odd to have a first click that does nothing!! It also means you cant really have the radio on with the engine off for fear of burning the coil out!

Thanks in advance for any replies

Whith the exception of the unconnected wire (with shield) in teh snd photo, I don;t think any of the wires pictured in the photos is original.

They look like they could be from an aftermarket alarm or stereo system. The blue wire that has the obvious splice could be from the power antenna (does it have a power antenna?).

Could be a faulty ignition switch, connectors or the cables from the 1st position could be shot.

ah, so it should have power on the 1st click? i suspected it should.

the car does have a power 'antenna' or ariel, i believe the 2 wires in in the passenger footwell are for this. However i cant work out how it should be connected up?

The car does have an alarm, so yeah those purple wires may be to do with that.

Anyone any idea about the blue ones in the engine bay?

Assuming you have a power antenna but its not connected, power antenna wires usually run from the antenna to the stereo directly, or at least one wire should, there should be an earth also. Your stereo may have a dedicated power antenna output or an 'aux' power output - this needs to run to the antenna.

As for the other stuff, as mentioned, aftermarket stuff - its possible someone ran a speaker wire to the back for a boombox, or an amp for the good speakers, or to some rear fill-in speakers.

For instance, on my car, some heathen PO had hacked the carpet which covers each wheel well storage area to fit 6by9 speakers. These had been removed when I got the car, so it just had to big holes, yuch. Can't have sounded all that good in the flimsy matting either!

Best bet for getting a 'switched' supply might be to find another accessory that switches on with the first turn of the key and using that for your stereo's switched feed. The main power for the stereo will come from the continuous power feed and not the switchable, so it won't put that much loading on the other accessory. (Not a strictly 'keep it original' style solution, but it'll work)

That white plug in the second picture could be a switched power supply. I think I used that to hook up my stereo. Check it with a meter.

Or if you're meter-challenged, use a test bulb! - just hook up a bulb to the wire and an earth and try the ignition....

i think i tested it yesterday (i say 'think' as i tested a lot of wires yesterday lol) and didnt get anything from it - could be missing a fuse tho. i'll re-test it.

It also means you cant really have the radio on with the engine off for fear of burning the coil out!
When things are as they were from the factory, key insertion with no turn switches on power to the radio.
Power to dash, exterior running lights, interior and luggage area lights should be available with no key at all.
Headlights require key in and turned to ignition-on.

Im a newby and dont speak english so well but maybe you could help me I have a third 924 (actually one of my three cars was for used parts) Tere was a mess with the wires because somebody before me had cut all unknown wires and nothing worked correctly....so I decided to change the wires (a part which goes threw the firewall to the engine room) but now I have some unknown wires hanging near the fusebox and I would like to fix that mess. (btw there is no backlights on the cauges) and the headlight comes up if turn the lights on but if I turn them off the lights wount come down and Left High Beam don´t work too (Before changing the fusebox the Left Low Beam was missing and High beam was OK) I have checked all of the fuses and relay´s
Here are the unknown wires:

Sorry beckause of my bad language but maybe somebody coud help me

Jeff01 - Some of those wires with 1/4" female spade connectors probably go to the "G" section on the back of
the fuse-relay panel. I have locations for some of them written down for my car - for instance a wt/ye
(white wire with yellow stripe) goes to "G6" - that may be one of the wires hanging in your 3rd picture.
This pic of the back of the fuse-relay panel shows the "G" connectors at upper-left -
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/smoothies931pics/detail?.dir=a174&.dnm=4bfc.jpg&.src=ph

"G" connectors, wire colors and (wire sizes)
G1 - re/br (1.5) foglights
G3 - bk (alarm) & bk/ye (power windows) (0.5)
G4 - gr/gn (0.5) & gr/wt dash lights (0.5)
G6 - wt/ye (1.0)
G7 - bk/vi (0.5) AC and blower
G8 - wt (1.5) high beams
"G area", but not connected - gn/re (≈3.0), re/bk + added re (≈1.0-0.5)

These are the colors and abbreviations used by Porsche -
bk - black
wt - white
re - red
gn - green
ye - yellow
gr - grey
br - brown
bl - blue
vi - violet

fuses 1-2-3-4 should all be the same amps. 8amp and white.

only 5 -10 -15 are 16amp -red/pink.
the rest are 8 amp -white

jeff01

you should update your Profile so we know where you are from. If you leave the Location blank then everyone assumes you are from the USA and your Euro front bumper tells me you are not.

I'm not sure why so many members from the US don't know where they are. It`s a mystery.
