Okay I'm looking to play with the curve of my distributor.
Is there a basic vw or any other basic distributor that will fit the 924?
I need to get at the springs inside to change the curve so I don't want to invest a lot on an experiment.
There seems to be no way to pull that 924 apart in one piece to change those springs. I wonder how they rebuild them?

I'm not entirely sure which one your car has, but I've often seen Bosch "009" distributors mentioned (though not necessarily in association with the 924 and not necessarily not ). Any way here's some stuff you might find useful or at least interesting while you have your head in the distributor.. it mentions "009", "010" and "050" Bosch distributors as well as some others - http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/distributor.htm

If you go to my website you will find in the electronics page (click electronics button) and it has two different distributors...

I figured with the cost of trying to get a distributor recurved, it's better to spend a little extra and get an Electromotive DIS system...

I spoke briefly with a tech who was pretty familiar with VW/Porsche distributors.... he said that the 009 couldn't be put on the 924... I asked about the gear swap, and he just said no, it wouln't provide the right timing. I am guessing this is probably correct.

There is a relational euqation between the rotation of the dist. shaft, the circumference of the circle traveled by the rotor tip, and the revolution of the crankshaft. I am sure it can be calc'ed but I don't want to get into the math right now.

Anyway, my guess is, you could probably make a different dist. fit, but there would be frustration making it work properly.

For that matter, you could figure out how to gear the dist. shaft to spin twice as fast, fit an MSD or Mallory dist for a V-8 (with adjustable vacuum and mechanical curves) and double plug the head.

Or, just take Applebit's advice and fit a DIS system.

I just found the "009" distributor in an old Automotion catalog. They were selling it for use on Porsche 356's and the one pictured shows no gear - apparently it's driven by a tab and slot arrangement.
The cap clips still look unchanged though.

If you want to build the mount that holds the sensor in place then it'll only cost you $550-600. More if you have someone build it for you (like me)

The big question is: is $550-600 worth it for my Porsche? Well, if you want a large increase in horsepower, better fuel economy, easier starts (WAY WAY EASIER) and all the other benefits of DIS, then it's worth it...
