So using my original dictum, the only current sportscars out there are the Boxster and MX5.

BRZ? Or is part of your "dictum" no coupes?

And an early 911? Only as much of a GT as a 356.

BRZ/GT86 feels much like a 944. I had an opportunity to drive GT86 on a racetrack and it only lacked mid-range power.
I would buy one definitely as a modern affordable sports car.

944 feels more comfortable, heavy and "calm" car comparing to 924. But it's one breed in behavior and "habits". I was very excited to see a modern car that drives similar. I drove lots of modern sports cars and hot-hatches on the racetrack(it's my job) but they never felt like GT86. Even new MX5. If I wasn't transaxle addict I would buy one for sure.
