Cbass - You do any machining?
I'm thinking of getting into that a bit. Won't be a competitor though - I have an idea for a camera that's not currently being made. If it was, I would have just bought one, but instead I'll have to make it myself - and then make some more and hopefully make a bundle. Shouldn't need full sized milling machines and lathes, so I'm thinking of starting with a small (and inexpensive) mill to see what I can do. Will be cutting aluminum, so a small machine should suffice and have been giving myself a course with the textbook and workbook, "Machining Fundamentals". Maybe I'll get into making little bits and pieces for the Porsche too - no critical engine parts though. |

That's nothing, I'm a gentleman farmer and semi-retired builder of log and timber structures. Graduated from Rochdale College in '72 with a major in LSD.

Just drilling and cutting. I am getting a big Rigid drill press, and I have a mitre saw for good angle cuts.
Next up is the hand mandrel, then I get a new TIG welder. I should be doing custom work within 6 months.

for all who wants to know.
I am 31 years old.
I live in backwoods Milner , GA just south of Griffin on old highway 41.
Griffin is just South of the Atlanta Speedway in Hampton, GA.
I had an accident that resulted in a brain stem injury and bleeding on the front of the brain.
I have to take some expensive meds now but the doctor is now able to throttle that back.
I will be permanently disabled for life. I will be getting my full VA pension soon.
I will buy some land, build a house, carriage house style garage and have a metal machining workshop setup soon. I still have my sanders, dremels, valve and seat grinders, bead blast cabinet, drill presses, shop press. metal lathe engine puller and stand.
I also have the equipment and bluprints to build a paint shop with heatlamps. I have an aircompressor, paint guns and airtools of all kinds from ratches and wrenches to metal cutters.
I have a full complement of air conditioning tools including a multi refrigerant recycling machine. I am ASE / EPA IMACA certified.
will be doing some protype work on aircraft electronic ignition systems.
also will be redesigning the ailing 924 vacuum systems and making cutting dies for 924 tb gaskets for big bore tb's.
will sell premade manifold already fitted with audi tb's for a fee plus exchange of manifold and old tb.
Cbass wanna make some of my braces and pay me a flat 15 to 20 percent on what you sell.
you can even market my other plans to vw audi enthusiast / racers as the electricals where I made the mods are similar.
and Joe, I have a switch in parallel to the fan thermoswitch.
cbass,
my designs should be adaptable to most cars with upper ftont shock or strut mounts.

Coconutcowboy,
Sounds like you're doing all right all the same. I'll horse trade you log home/timberframe stuff for some of that cool Porsche stuff your working on. http:/www.loghomesontario.com
Also, if you have any leads on some cheap airplanes, let me know. My son's a newbie commercial pilot and needs something to put the 'hours' on.

I already have plans for strut braces. What about camber plates?
I am thinking about coil overs too. I have seen these kits, and all they have are a couple of threaded nipples of 1.5" pipe, and a couple of fancy nuts. To adjust ride height, you just adjust the nuts. I can get a wholesale deal with any spring manufacturer I want. I bet I could get wholesale from Koni and Bilstein too.
Anyways, reveal more, regulars!

Was a Geophysicist, Looked for oil and minerals in the subsurface of the earth. Then went back to school and became a commercial banker. Ten years of that was enough, now back in school to become a real estate appraiser.
Working on mechanical things brings you back in touch with reality every once in a while.

I travel all over the world although it is only once a year. I pick a country I like for that year and travel there on a fully paid trek by the owner of certain trees I am interested in. I am in the toothpick industry but cater to upscale clientelle. Sometimes I buy an entire mahogany tree, teak, ebony etc for the manufacture of monogrammed toothpicks. I do sell plastic, silver and gold toothpicks.
As a guest of the owner of the specific trees I get free airfare, either hotel or home stays and meals. I then ship the tree back to the states and my shop.
My wife and I have been to England, Libya, Italy, Germany, France, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Bermuda, Caymen Is, Mexico and Easter Island.
Some of my customers ask for scented and flavored toothpicks. They pick out the taste they want and I supply them.
I carry a small sample case from client to client. I also get a chance to view the customers teeth so that I can customize the picks for very tight teeth to spaced teeth like mine. |

Sean,
Sounds like you havent let the injury slow you down a bit. I salute your attitude. My 17 yo son had a bad motocross wreck in January. He missed a 70 foot jump and broke his femur /tib and fib. He developed compartment syndrome and the Dr's missed it. He ended up in the hopsital for a month, had 6 operations. Had to have dead muscle removed and has nerve damage leaving him with drop foot and having to wear a leg brace. It doesnt slow him a bit. I built a left foot throttle for his car a month after he came home and he plans on riding MX again next month. |

Dwak,
a word of advice, tell your son to get a degree in business and fly on the side. This industry is in shambles, and will continue to be as there are THOUSANDS of pilots on the street. Having been flying for over nine years I am now living through my first 'furlough' its not fun to be working the family business while sitting on thousands of hours, $+100,000's in training, and a Bacholers degree while waiting for my airline to recall .
Feel free to drop an email.
also, if he's got his commercial rating and wants to build hours, have him get his CFI/CFII & MEI. good luck finding a job though
Kevin
PS. Furloughs suck. Wont be back in training till the end of the summer.
