Excuse my ignorance but assuming the coilover is adjustable does the torsion bar need to be reset in order tolower the rear and therefore preloading the coil? Or does one just install and start lowering away?

I want to raise the back end by 5mm and obtain a more rigid behaviour of the suspension system.
However i think you can lower the car by a small amount even without reindexing.....not sure how healthy that is tho.. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

They install adjustable coil-overs in a 944 Turbo in Series 6, episodes 3 & 4 of Wheeler Dealers, if you want a general overview of how it's done... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

..just find out wich way to turn the t-bars ...to the front
or 2 the rear to lower it not raise.. oh and how many notches would do.
After a look it seems those beetle coilovers are
not available in the states. paragon front kit gets the go. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Yes, initial lowering has to be done via torsion bar adjustment, then depends on the system/kit you choose.
1. Full coilover rear end + dispose of the torsion bars = All height adjustment and spring rates can be done by the shock/spring option
2. 'Semi' coilover + keep torsion bars = all height adjustment is still done by torsion bar. Coilover has helper spring to stiffen things up and avoid bottoming out (this is what I have)
However in system 2 if I have already lowered using torsion bar and install a taller spring I can raise the car. Defeats the option of retaining the torsion bars though and then carrying extra weight for no gain.
Pro's and con's of loosing the torsion bars. Most UK racers of 924/944/968's still retain torsion bars and then use helper springs on the coil over. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Just a few points but if you lose the torsion bars and go with full coilover rear, don't you need to strengthen the rear mounts?
Also, I believe Morghen is correct - you can lower the rear a small amount without reindexing the torsion bars. I think it's around 20mm from memory but I'm not 100% sure. _________________ 1979 UK 932 |

Can of worms! Some people swear this is not a problem, but I would not go this route without reinforment. . .ideally integrated into a cage. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I had to with mine, as the original mounts started cracking. May not be a problem with lower spring rates for street use. _________________ Andrew
