I didn't have too much trouble doing this job with the engine in the car. Just did the pan gaskets last month. One of both the 5mm and 6mm allen head bolts were slightly rounded which made extraction difficult. The crossmember removal and disconnecting the steering gear was painless, and the motor mounts went untouched.

I had more difficulty lining up and reinstalling the pan alone. It's easier with two pairs of hands
