i dont like the idea of a chat as it would almost eliminate this forum board and people wouldnt be able to view it unless they were there when it was said

well no. we are on at diff times and diff time zones.

also, you cant "refer back" to chats, while you can on this board

We tried the chat yesterday and the board is still here...chat is not terribly exciting, but it works.

you could try using a real time chat program, such as Internet Relay Chat (aka IRC) http://www.mirc.com
