i drove it around the foot hills outside of town tonight with the clear night sky and sun roof out, had the needle burried at 85 for the majority of the ride. i really love this car and can't see myself giving up on it ever, lemon or no lemon.
when the garage gave me a best case of $1000.00 to repair the problem i decided to not to let them go any further, they never got a look inside, but their testing did show that something is up with that cylinder. amoung this problem they also said that the rear brake cylinders were leaking, the muffler was bad, and the ac was dead (like i hadn't tried the ac it's texas!). these are the only things they found wrong doing their bumper to bumper survey.
1000.00 is a lot of money for just a repair. i could see that kind of money if they were replacing the head or if my car was dead. maybe i am not used to the costs of working on a porsche. i just wish i could loose that feeling that they are trying to put one over on me. the second opinion should help though. that's why i am so glad to have this board. you guys rock.

You can adjust the valve clearances yourself. A compression leak could be caused be misadjusted valve clearances, and this is a simple quick procedure. It is much easier if you spend the $10-$15 bucks and buy the valve adjustment tool, which has the acceptable adjustment screw range marked on the body of the tool.
Make sure that you remove the camshaft oil delivery tube, clean it, checking all of the oil delivery holes, and replace the plastic elbow that snaps into the head to supply the oil delivery tube, as this is a prime spot to lose oil pressure.
Replacement rear wheel cylinders are cheap, as they are VW parts (less than $20 each) and can be had everywhere. A better solution to the poor braking is a conversion to four wheel disc brakes. The conversion, including new wheels can be done for less than $800 including new wheels. The last conversion that I did cost $400 including a set of 924S phone dial wheels that needed refinishing. I paid another $160 to have the wheels powdered in the original silver color, and $400 more for new tires. Then I recovered $400 reselling the parts that I removed when I installed the new brakes, and the old wheels and tires.
