my 79 924 doesn't have door speakers....I am thinking of adding some and was wondering if those of you who have door speakers..are you still using the dash speaker as well or just disonnecting it....I have rear speakers (stock) and not real great sounding but would rather option for adding some small speaker boxes for the back....I don't want to go through the panel removal BS......I am not a "thumper" but I just want a little bass and I don't have ANY now....I put in a Blaupunkt CD player that works great but still hardly any bass.... _________________ 79 924 "Missy Grey" |

This probably isn't a popular idea but my center dash speaker was removed and in its place I put two small speakers.
I should probably get a photo of this on the website.
I have always wanted to install the door speakers but I really loathe cutting the original door panels and there just isn't a lot of room to mount anything behind it. _________________ -Stu

I don't really like cutting the door panels either but with some nice black covers I guess I could live with it........or just go with some good speaker boxes in the back....I have a recording studio and have some old studio monitors that sound great and they are real small..... _________________ 79 924 "Missy Grey" |

The 3 speaker system, that is on the older cars has a different impedance than most for speaker systems. The stock radio is set up for 3 speaker it has the right ohms. to run Three speakers. You can run 4 or 2 speakers with you cd unit. You will need to run speaker wires to you doors. Check crutchfield for the 4 x 6 that you will need.http://www.crutchfield.com/ the 4x6 distort real easy because of the speaker shape. I hear that there is 2-way or 3 way that has a rounded design that does'nt disort real easy. But unless you just want one door speaker and on dash speaker I would ditch the dash speaker. You should get better bass from the door becasue of the cavity vs the small enclosure of the dash. _________________ Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. anyone thought of mounting some small tweeters in the center dash. the only thing i don't like about mounting speakers in the dash is the amount of heat that is subjected to that area. _________________ '82 931

Here is my center dash speaker solution:
Like I said, probably not a very popular option but it worked until I can figure out whether or not the door speaker solution is worthwhile. _________________ -Stu

I added two 6x9's in wheel weel location. Sounds OK...Yeah I don't know about cutting into door panels If you do, you might want to put some Dynamat behind the speakers, unless you like that tin can sound _________________ 1978 924 n/a |

nice, are those tweeters or just really small speakers. i will be mounting tweeters there in addition to door speakers. get a set of 944 door panels. they have the 4 x 6 square pre cut, just don't use the cheap plastic covers they come with. if you need a set i have a brown / tan set that are in my 924 i am about to part out. _________________ '82 931

Surprise! Those aren't tweets. They are Sony XS-33 Dual Cone Speakers and yes, the speaker cover fits nicely. _________________ -Stu

I dont know much about electronics, but awhile ago I did a little reading to try and learn more . what I read , said that the distortion comes from the radio , at high volume ,it doesnt have the power to drive the speakers ,and an inexpensive radio and an inexpensive amp together will give better sound than an expensive radio by itself .and a 4 channel amp (4 jacks for speakers ) is better than a 2 channel amp (2 jacks for speakers) you can hook up 4 speakers to 2 jacks, but you'll lose either the front to back or left to right fader ,and distortion over time will damage the speakers .
other brands just below the amps list .
http://www.123av.com/Products.asp?CatBrand_ID=718
it also said that the more speakers you have the better the quaility the sound . so 4 3-way speakers is better than 4 single speakers
pyle has a 4-way speaker for those of us, who have a little trouble with the higher frequencies , wish I had a dollar for evey time I said WHAT to my wife.
again other brands below the list .

this stuff might be obvious to all of you, but I didnt know it .

Factory?? Are you certain?
In all early years, Porsche was using the 3 speaker system. What do you have behind the dash speaker cover?
In the 924S and early 944's that area is simply empty because Porsche started putting the speakers in the doors. _________________ -Stu

| i am quite sure they are factory, otherwise someone did a bang up job of cutting these in cause it looks perfect. i thought it was a regular thing before, i have seen the weird lookin 4x6s(?) in the 924S's and thought they went away from the 4 inchers. although as i have been working with other 924's i think this is unique of my car... next time i take my door apart i will take a picture. it sounds great where it is, and the depth is perfect. i put in all new infinity reference series all the way around and rewired everything (damn common negative ground) i did have a middle speaker, but when i pulled it out it turned to dust. |

Those are most definately not factory. The factory mounting position for speakers is lower than yours are mounted, and they were all 4x6 speakers for the 924/924S/early 944 interiors. Also, your door panel appears to have been modified. What material is it made of? What is the white (chrome?) strip? None of that is factory, either. _________________ Jon Furst |
