|

Okay, I am taking out my exhaust so I can replace my transmission, while I am at it, I took apart the wastegate to make sure it is okay.....and it definitely isn't. The diaphragm is cracked and there is a huge hole in it.
Has anybody recently replaced their wastegate diaphragm and know of a good/cheap source for a new one? PartWerks is selling them on ebay for $100, which is a bit steep. |

I guess you know why you're getting 15 lbs. of boost now. _________________ Jon Furst |

I got one from PAR in NY approx 5 years ago.
Did it tear where it folds? My last one tore there - I think it's not only from being folded, but also from vibrating against the inside of the housing. Next time I have to change mine I'm thinking of maybe attaching a section from an old diaphragm either to the new diaphragm, gluing it on below the fold and have it extend up to protect the fold area from contacting the housing - or attaching the old diaphragm section right to the housing adjacent to the fold.
The last new one I put in, I treated with a silicone preservative - just on the upper (vent) side of the fabric. That was on 11/14/93 - same one's in there almost 10 years later, so maybe it was a good move.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

That's right - you were getting 15lbs... What I don't get now is why it stopped at 15 - should have been tripping the overboost cutout switch regularly. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

It was getting 15 lbs consistently....until this past week, I noticed it wasn't stopping at all. The P.O. had disabled the cut off switch, and I took the switch out completely so I could put my boost gauge connection in it's place.
The waste gate covered in oil on the inside. It looks like the air/oil separator is (or was) bad. It doesn't look like I am getting oil coming from the separator any more (my new intake isn't covered with oil on the inside, and it's been there for a few weeks, and during hard driving too). I'm guessing that the oil ate away at the rubber. |

Whoa Alex - livin' dangerous without the cutout switch.
Could be the diaphragm had at least a small hole in it for some time that allowed the boost to build consistently to 15, then a week ago it completely let go.
Sounds like a crazy amount of oil got into the wastegate - but how? Through the control line from the intake - just doesn't sound right though..too much. Mine was completely dry last time I had it apart. -And I'm not aware of any way the operation or inoperation of the oil seperator could introduce oil into the wastegate. Unless it got there from the other side, through the exhaust? A problem with crankcase breathing causing pressure in there that backs up through the turbo oil return line, forcing oil past the turbo seal and into the exhaust... Leaking oil from the turbo - maybe a blocked oil return line from the turbo to the oil pan adding to a leak? -One of these combined with a worn valve guide in the wastegate letting oil from the exhaust past the valve into the upper part of the WG...? I don't know, just speculating. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Tore my 80 all original wastegate apart today. The spring was extremely dry and rusty. The pressure side of the diaphram had a very light coating of oil.
Might as well replace both the spring and the diaphram. I'm looking for a .8 bar spring. |

| You can get a diaphram from Andial. I bought one from them about a year ago so I do remember the price but I believe around 20-25 dollars. and I have a spring from a 1980 turbo if you need one. |

the last cost from andial was like 55 for the black rubber and 75 for the teflon white.
Just call for current prices and please list.

Is one type better than the other, or are they for different types of wastegates?
I tried to call Andial yesterday but the parts guy was out to lunch. I'll try again today. |

The teflon vers is probably about $80 then...
Seems logical that the teflon vers would last longer - I don't know. I'm just considering myself lucky that the black rubber one I put in has lasted almost 10 years. I have a spare in a ziplock bag in a box that I bought about 5 years ago, so I was getting ready to have to replace it that long ago - should probably open the bag every couple years and retreat the spare with some silicone. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. The teflon is high heat and racing app.
best to ask them
as you can see 59.00 is better than partwerks ripoff price of 100.00 _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net
