$40 is way cheaper then rebuilding overheated engine. _________________ www.btrpalmbeach.com

Sure you can use generic one.
I would ask myself few questions.
How much cheaper is it going to be?
How much time are you going to waste making it fit ?
Is it going to fit as factory, molded one?
Are you sure that it is not going to leak?
All those questions for $40 ? _________________ www.btrpalmbeach.com

Yes 40 bucks for a hose is probably way more than its manufacturing price, but the hose is molded into a specific shape and it will guarantee another 40 years of driving without fear that it will burst.
Maybe a straight one could work(if made for the right temp and reinforced like the oem one) but the oem ones are bent to clear some stuff around there...so maybe a straight one will work for a while and then burst open due to something rubbing against it?
Like your Walmart carpet idea...its something new that may work for a short period of time...but not quite the right thing and in the end it adds to a botched up car that will feel and maybe even be unreliable and certainly not desirable in case of resale.
Then again..its 40 bucks man...you're driving a Porsche..still a hose but with a generic part replacement you're driving less of a Porsche...you're driving a low cost repaired thing that may or may not work as intended.
Then its the support the spare parts industry aspect...if we keep botching up our cars with random stuff and not buying original parts for them...we should not be surprised that many parts are not produced anymore. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The last time I replaced mine I did it without removing the thermostat housing. Sprayed he inside with armorall and slid it down onto the water pump and then back up onto the thermostat housing. I remember it being a bit of a struggle and the new hose was nice and playable. It would probably be more difficult with a piece of bulk hose. _________________ 1980 Porsche 924 N/A USA

I expect that a straight replacement will kink and not flow properly. _________________ Vaughan Scott

A silicone straight, elbow and joiner will probably cost at least the $40 of the OEM rubber......having bought a lot of silicone for my build. I still kept the OEM bottom rubber hose. Plug and play!! _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

When I bought my dash and seat covers Werk924 had these I believe. Price was about 14 Euro....shipping might kill it though.
Wouldn't ever go cheap on stuff like this Mike, good straight heads are hard to come by. Ask me how I know... _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive
