Hey,
The linkage(shifter) isn't spose to wiggle around while the car is in a gear right? I've heard of some "shell" that the linkage rods connects to that gets worn.? It's starting to make it difficult to shift into reverse, 1st, sometimes 4th, and it's pretty annoying. How do I fix it so it doesn't wiggle around anymore?

First you have to find where it's loose. If you're as lucky as me, it will be right there at the shift lever under the boot. My linkage just fell off at that point a while ago. I held it together by hand for the trip home and fabricated a replacement for the clip in there from some heavy hanger wire.

Try changing the the tranny fluid also
youll need a hand pump that fits on the oil
jug to full it.Theres bushings on the tranny to that are hard to get to withut alot of WORK.

The tranny fluid has been changed and it didn't help it alot... I just switched shift linkages out and the plastic liners are good so I'm guessing that means I have to drop the rear end correct?

Yeah, you'll probably have to deal with the rear end. Do it. If you don't, there's a very good chance you'll end up destroying the trans. If you destroy that trans, they're virtually impossible to find the parts for, so you'll end up swapping in an Audi-style box. Much more effort than fixing the bushings, trust me, BTDT.

| Didn't someone here cut access holes in the body to get access to the linkages from above (from inside the car)? |

A ha! Then it's safe to say you're not terribly opposed the practice. If it ever becomes necessary, that's probably the way I'll go in.
How'd it go in DesMoines, Vaughan? Get your car? Get anything else?

The trip went well, if boring and slow... but that's the better way to make a tow. Exhausting, towing for 20 hrs. Got the car, it's running now, though it won't stay running (thinking bad control pressure regulator or wiring)... had a bad fuel pump, haven't even found the relay yet (but so what). It's very ugly, needs paint badly. Going back to the original, dark silver metallic of some sort.

Does that cause problems with the 4 speeds as well? I have a '78 with the audi 4 speed and it moves while in gear but I don't have any problems at all shifting. Where is the lnkage section that wears out in the back? All I saw when I had the tranny down to do the clutch was the linkage from the shifter going to a bar that stuck up out of the top the the tranny.

I think redline fluid was put in the rearend, it was pensoil. Anyways cutting through the back sounds like a good idea, screw dropping the transmission... that sounds painful. Where do you cut through and what parts do i need to fix it?
Thanks!

hey actually you dont need to drop the tranny if you jackup the rear end so you can get under you should be able to get under and change the linkage, it will be difficult but not too bad, helps if you have slim hands and are mecanically inclined, this is only so if it is the linkage on the tranny end

| Is that linkage only on the 5 speed or is it on the 4 speed too? |
