ok so i just had my oil pan reseald... rear and front main oil seals changed... oilpump gasket changed, camcover gasket changed, oil cap repalced... and im STILL LOOSING OIL!!!! its really pissing me off... all that time and money and i have no idea where the damn thing is leaking from... im loosing about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart every 200-280 miles! i know this cant be normal! arrgggg... any sugestions... anyone... please.... before i take a sledgehammer to the damn engine compartment... maybe i should put molases in the oil so it cant leak!

| Alex is it leaking or are you burning it due to bad rings or valve seals? Does it happen no matter how you are driving... high rpms vers puttering around? |

I had on old ford sierra that pissed oil out big time. It was leaking from the oil pressure switch...
check the back of your engine for a leak around this area.
I had to full that sierra up with oil every week. cost a fortune R100 oil, for a R5 pressure switch |

Two things to check. The oil pressure guage.
I had a leak from the top of the head. The cause was a bit of old gasket still stuck to the valve cover. Since that raised the area around the gasket bit, the oil would seep aroung the sides. |

if i was burning it wouldnt i see some out the tail pipe... my exhuast burns clear.. ill check the pressure swich... is it an easy replace if it is leeking there or a huge PITA...

Are you losing oil or are you leaking it? Can you see oil in the engine compartment or under the car?
It is normal for the engine to consume (burn)some oil. Porsche allows for rather high oil consumption in cars that are being driven in a hard fashion.

will as for driving... im driving it maybe 3-4miles each way to and from work... and maybe a couaple of more than that around town... and as for driving hard... well i do drive up a big hill (hollywood hills mullholand) and then down the other side... when i drive down the hill is use the engine to slow the car instead of riding the breaks... this translates to about 3000rpms up and down the hill... and i usually shift at around 3000 rpms... so you guys tell me... am i driving it hard? not sure what "hard" is for this car...

You won't necessarily see burning oil, especially if your car has a cat. Is your air-box filling with oil? What weight oil are you using?

| If you're not getting signs of oil leakage under the car, have someone drive behind you to look for smoke. Also, when you use the engine as a brake, that increases vacuum, so if you are leaking around the valve seals, it makes sense that there will be more oil sucked into the cylinders at those times. |

The key clue here is your statement that you are using engine brake on hills. High vacuum is creted when you do that, and while it won't hurt your engine any, bad valve stem seals and worn-out valve guides will allow oil to be sucked into the combustion chambers and burned. Under lower vacuum conditions on street drving you may not notice the condition.
A compression check won't find these parts defective, but you have to remove the camshaft, cam followers, valve springs and retainers to check the condition of the valve guides.
I would suggest that if you can see the source of the oil leak on the exterior of your engine, and you can see blue smoke when engine braking, that you need to pull the head, and have it serviced. |

Yeah, the valve stem seals are a big source of lost oil - they're like bakelite, not rubber, after 20 years! Dead giveaway is smoking at startup that goes away - oil leaks past the seals when it sits for a while.
I also have a helluva time getting the end seals on the oil pan to seal properly.
I don't think you're revving the engine too much. I think you're not revving it enough!!! The torque curve is flat from 3000-5000RPM. You're shifting just when it gets good!!! Wind it all the way up. The engine really starts to sing nice when you get over 6k.

ok couple of questions.... i always forget this, but what color is oil burning look like commming out of the tail pipe? and 5000-6000 rpms... thats notgonna wear out the engine prematurely? mine is not a turbo its just a plain 924... also if it is the stuff in the head that you guys mentioned can i live with it for a while or am i gonna kill my engine?... im just getting kinda sick of dumping money into the car EVERY weekend!

| Oil burn smoke is greyish blue. If it likes to burn oil, it will be most evident when going down a long hill in 3rd gear, like at freeway speeds. Are you leaking oil, or not? |
