| What is the best way to put on a wing for a 1978 924? Would a 944 wing be better? |

get a 924S wing if anything. it's smaller than a 944 wing, and looks cooler too...well, I dunno about cooler, but it looks right...not too big, not too small.

i have a question... there is a 944 at a local junk yard and its still has its factory wing on it (i hope if no one took it yet)... can that fit on my 77 924 n/a ithought the rear hatches were different shapes. i hope im wrong. if it will fit my 924 is it easy to take off the 944 hatch and put on mine or is it glued to the glass?

The frame is glued to the glass. If it ever comes loose, you are screwed. The three parts of the wing are bolted to the frame, studs are embedded in the wing parts.
The glass is the same shape for the 924 and 944.
Using a 944 wing on a 924 without adding a large front spoiler to the front of the car will unbalance the car aerodynamically. |

acutally i had the glass coming ungled problem already and i lucked out at the junk yard and picked up a hatch for $30 it great shape (glass and frame firmly glued in place)... so as far as the 944 spoler all i have to do is take some tools with me to the yeard and i can unbolt from the glass there and put it on mine? cool... as for the aero dyamics... well i have a 77 n/a california (95hp) with a 4 speed manual... its not exactly a rocket if you know what i mean.. so im not too worried about screwing up the areo dynamics that much...

If the glass is Ok in the 944 one at the junk yard why don't you take the whole unit.
Four bolts and its of the wreck, plus flicking the struts off. |

If the glass that you bought was not made to have the wing installed on it, you are not to be able to install the wing from the car in the salvage yard.
If you can get it cheap enough, since the hatch in the yard already has the glass separating from the frame, take the wing parts only, if you can get them off.
On the bottom of the frame around the back and sides, you can see the nuts that need to be unscrewed to release the wing parts. |

My 924T has the rear part attached with phillips head screws and the side (lateral) pieces are attached by little round nuts with a slot. When attached, the bolts come through the center of the nuts, so a regular flat head screwdriver wouldn't work on these. What you'd need is a flat head screwdriver with about a 1/16" or 3/32" wide slot cut in the center of the blade. There must be a name for the tool needed, but I don't know what that would be - a spanner-something? Maybe someone who's familiar with the 944 spoiler can tell you if those spoilers use the same types of fasteners.
Actually, just a pair of pliers or a small pair of visegrips could be used to remove those slotted nuts on the side pieces. |

If te frame is not twisted too badly the glass can be re fixed. Any compentent windscreen guy can do this.
I've just had it done on my old 924 N/A. It'd certainly be easier than removing the wing and then trying to drill the existing frame for the wing.
The glass is real close to the edge and when drilling to fit the wing be very careful you don't get the glass. |

Just to elaborate on what "Gohim" said- if the hatch you have was not meant to have a wing on it you will not be able to just drill holes and mount the wing. Hatches that have wings on them have also have the edge of the glass shaped to accept the wing bolts. In other words, where the bolts come thru the frame, the glass is cut out about 3/16" to .25" so the bolts can clear it. So you'll either need to aquire the wing with the frame and glass or you'll need to fabricate small but strong mounting brackets to retrofit the wing to the wingless frame. That's what I did. I put a '87 924S wing on my '79 924.
Good luck |

Hey if you can get the wing for about $30, I'd say go for it!!!
I found one here at our junk yard and they wanted $300 dollars for it including the entire back hatch (Glass and all) I didn't get it because it was so much, and I'm on a budget!
They would not sell me just the wing. (It was on a 80 944) |
