What is the minimum size line I should use for an oil cooler? What size adapter plate do I use? and do I really need a thermostat?
Thinking about making an oil cooler using a refrigeration coil. Only problem I see right off hand is the tubes on the coil are 3/8" which I'm thinking are a bit small for an oil cooler. Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Aw c'mon, it's a Porsche. Have a little respect - put the Red Green Show oil cooler on the mother-in-laws' car. Put a real one on the Porsche... JC Whitneys has them cheap - just don't tell anyone where you got it.

And make sure to get one with proper AN (Aeroquip) fittings and hose. Nothing sucks more than blowing a rubber oil hose, ask me how I know! It's expensive but worth it. So is having an oil cooler, if you run it hard.

931's have them just behind the front spoiler on the right side (at the bottom and just in front of the windshield washer reservoir). These cars have vents cut in the spoiler though to let air pass through. Hoses to them are 21mm OD - can't tell what the ID is. Assuming 1/8"+ hose walls, the ID would be about 1/2".

| VW&P (now european car) magazine ran a project article years ago showing how to add an oil cooler to a 924. They used a "sandwich adapter" under the oil filter, with a shorter oil fiter from a BMW (to clear the exhaust), and a oil cooler with adapter brackets fabricated to mount on the steering rack mounting bolts. |

Porsche 924 Turbo oil cooler lines are 1/2" I.D. (internal diameter), so don't use anything smaller.
Buy a new oil cooler from Jegs, or summit racing or racerswholesalers, JC Whitney, etc, etc, --they are cheap, about $50.00.
Go to Vaughan's site for a pic of his installation. I used his setup as a guide. Hint, the longitudinal right next to the windshield washer tank has three thread holes (6 or 8 mm). I used a "L" shaped pisece of aluminum as a bracket , bolted the "L" piece to the longitudinal, and attached my thermostat and remote oil filter to the "L" piece. I ran teflon-lined steel braided hoses. Hint, buy an oil cooler with 1/2" NPT fittings rather than AN, b/c NPT hose ends are cheaper than AN. Go to Grainger.com and do a search for steel braided hose, that's where I bought my hose (they are in JIC fittings and JIC to NPT adapters are $1.50). -cheap.
Email me if you want me to send you some pics of my installation.
Also, I have a 924 turbo valance for sale that will allow you to mount an oil cooler behind the vents of the valance rather than infront of the radiator.

i was browsing through tweek's porsche catalog yesterday and saw an adapter that fits on a 914 or 924 where the oil filter sits, it requires the use of a different filter. this adapter will allow me to hook up a oil cooler but which one would i get? there is not alot of room on the driver's side of the engine compartment but there is a huge whole on the passengers side behind the light. does anyone have any pics of where they put their external cooler?

epsylon....
Why do you sign your name Champaigne Gold Weissach Edition?
Porsche never painted the Weissach Special Edition Gold, they were all painted Platinum Metallic.
Did you repaint your car in Gold?
The oil cooler adapter that you were inquiring about is what is called a "sandwich adapter", and the oil filter required was originally designed for a BMW product, these questions are both answered in my earlier post. |

I didn't repaint it (PO did). My car appears to have a more gold tint to it then the platuim metallic pictures I have seen on the net, I could be wrong. Maybe my idea of chapaign gold is really paltinum metallic. I'll post a picture later when I get home.
Seems like the oil cooler upgrade is really only useful on Turbos. Most of the info I have found, this website and others, was about Turbos/931.
