Well...

I tested a few things and tried a few of everyones ideas on trying to get my car finally running.

I was able to finally purchase a new fuel pump rely and fuse (Along with some testing wire), then when that didn't work, I tried to jump start it at both the fuse relay with putting the wires in the "T" section of the cars fuse relay.
Finally I also took and put a wire on the battery and the other end on the fuel pumps wires...I was able to get sparks but nothing hummed or turned on while the ignition was turned on

I'm now being lead to think that it is now the pump that is bad...correct? Or is there something that I forgot to check? (I did try putting in more gas, and tightening the battery cables even more to make sure that they were good and tight..just to make sure that I'd covered everything that I new about.)

Thanks

If it has been sitting around for a while with gas in the tank the pump is probably all gummed up. I had this same problem on my car I ended up going out and buying some acetone and putting as much into the pump as possible then just letting it soak in. About a week later it had loosend up enough that the pump could kick over and run without any problems. Sure beats spending $400 for a new fuel pump.

Warped,

If the acetone thing doesn't work and you need a fuel pump let me know. I am going to the junkyards next weekend and may be able to find one for you.

I have a fuel pump from a 76 924 (outside tank style) if you need one. You pay the shipping and it is yours. I will need to test it due to the fact it has been sitting for a while. It was disconnected from the tank and drained so should be O.K.

Wow, this is great support! Thanks guys

Adam, would a 76 pump fit my 77? It is a early 77 (Martini) so my guess would be yes...but I'm just making sure. Is it a Pierburg, or a Bosch feul pump? If you can get it going, I might take you up on it.

Thanks again.

Also Benski,

Let me know what you find? I'll also explore some junk yards around here as well...If I have to get a new/used one I'd really like it to be one of the Pierburgs you guys recommend as being a little more quietier..

Thanks

Warped,

You are correct that the 76/early 77 pumps are different than the later 77 aka 77.5 pumps. Is your pump short and wide (as wide as it is tall) or slender and tall?

Yeah, sorry, it won't fit, as your car is a Martini, and the later style. Interestingly enough, the Pierburg replacement is universal to all 924's in my experience.

Also, you should reconsider buying such a critical part from a junkyard - it will likely be in about as good shape as the pump that came with your car.

Sounds like it'd be worth first trying to soak it in acetone, though - let us know how it goes!

Vaughan,

I'm not a big fan of using a junkyard fuel pump either, but at $5 from my local DIY junkyard (assuming there's a 924 in there) it's a much lower cost risk for a car with an engine that may or may not even be working properly.

I just bought a new Bosch pump for my 80 931 from eurowebparts.com for less than $200.

My old pump still runs, its just noisy, I can drop it in the mail if you like to use it for trouble shooting.

The 5 dollar fuel pump could be worth a try. I lucked out a few years ago. I pulled one from an early VW Rabbit (Golf) It was a Bosch, and the part number ended in 957 instead of the 984 that the car is supposed to have. It has given me quiet faithful service for several years.

Thanks guys for the support,

I'm trying the Acetone trick right now, but at the same time I found a feul pump here for about 15.00 from a Used VW yard that I'm going to troubleshoot with tonight and tomorrow. (They say it was running just last week, before they took it out...we'll see.)

This is not to say that I may not have to still purchase a new one at some point.

I'll let you all know shortly

Well gang,

No luck...I just got done putting on the 15 dollar fuel pump that I was promised still worked...well turns out it doesn't, At least I can't seem to turn it on

It is looking like I have power (12 volts) everywhere that I've checked within the engine, per chapter 5 of the Haynes Manuel. I even got a reading off of the new pump that I just put in, and it is reading at 12 as well...So somehow or another, I'm just not getting it to turn on.

Should I just break down an buy a new pump??? I've gotten two quotes so far for about 200 dollars a piece...

Could there be still be another reason somewhere?

The car is turning on, but it just isn't starting...very frustrating.
