OK so The car want getting spark, and the mechanic finds out its the CDI box (the one on the fender) on my 80 931, he opens it up and one of the parts intenally has fried a conneting wire. Ok so ill have to replace that.
BUT!, when the car was getting spark it still wouldnt start. Now, im wondering if the cdi box was bad even when the car was getting spark, and therefore causing the car not to start(except for the ONE time that i got it started)
or could the non starting be mostlikely related to other stuff?
Thanks
Mike

There are other things you need to take into account. To get an engine to fire you need spark (at the right time), air, fuel (in the right mix), compression... There are endless possibilities, right now you haven't posted enough information to even start speculating about the problem. Post everything you know, all the tests you've run then we can start trying to help you troubleshoot.

Yes this is the same one.
To the earlier question, I have checked everything, timing, fuel, spark etc. but nothing made much of a difference.
BUT i actually got it running once, dont really know how, but when it did run, it ran just fine,(but i couldn't drive it cause the tranny was out) I checked and rechecked everything. tried adjusting things this way and that, but to no avail. but before i gave up and decided to take it to a mechanic, it was firing every couple of revolutions after lots of cranking. like it almost wanted to start.

I had a power steering pump sieze up on me, (would not turn ) and the drag on the starter kept the rpm's down and the motor would not start . If there is anything keeping your starter from reaching a high enough rpm the motor wont start when its cold .try removing all unnecessary belts and see if that does it. if not hang a tire on the back of your car and get another car to push start it in 2nd gear in case your starter is headed south. if you have a catalytic converter,it might be clogged , the back pressure could prevent the car from starting . make sure your coil wire is not touching metal , it could bleed off enough juice to weeken the spark so it wont start but still have a spark. make sure the distributor is not 180 degress out .

Either you have a cold-start problem...

(have you checked the cold start system to see if the cold start valve is working? I would put the cold start valve on a switch so that it ran whenever you held a button down, just to make sure it was spraying while you were cranking)

...or I guarantee that your timing and mixture are off. You can spend all day fiddling with it and finally it will start and run with no problems. I suggest you spend a few hours with a battery charger and a friend and play with the timing and mixture until you've tried just about every possible setting. It's a really irritating process that I went through after I replaced my headgasket and clutch on my 924. It took about two hours to get it to start. Once you get the car running, it's easy to set the timing and mixture, but you need to get to that point first.

Best of luck.

Yes I have done all that, i have jumped the CS but it was 75 degrees, and the CS isnt supposed to be needed in this weather. Again, i got it running once, and it ran just fine, but then nextday it woudlnt start again. and i played with the mixture everywhich way.
the only time it fired for sure was when accidentaly I switched one of the plug wires and it backfired.

Where do you live? I'd be happy to come over and help if you're close.

Have you checked to see if the fuel pump is spraying enough fuel?
Have you checked the injectors individually?
How about the warm-up regulator? Have you tried swapping in a different one to see if it helped?
Is the air-flow meter centered?
Does it swing freely?
Has the fuel filter been replaced just in case?
Did you drain and replace the fuel?
Have the plug gaps been checked?
Is the exhaust plugged up somehow?

Sorry for the laundry list, but I'm not really sure what you have done.
