What should I get for DEs? SA2000+ is required by ORPCA. . .
Should I get full face or open?
And, where should I look for "customization?" Not crazy about white. . .
TIA

Full face is a gimme. No question about it, if you value your jaw/dental work/pretty face/basal skull. You're compromising your safety with an open-face.
Certification - get an SA05 if you can at all and there should be plenty out there - think that's what I have.
Customization - I can totally relate! Cheapest option is stickers; you can get inexpensive sticker kits for motorcycle helmets that look pretty sharp. Another sticker option is to go Hog style and just put in a bunch of those which express your individuality! Painting is expensive, easily the cost of the helmet all over again. If you need to go that route, get hooked up with the local racers in your area - they'll know the local artists who do helmets. Then be sure to see some examples of thier work, make sure it fits your goals.
Somehow I can guess at some designs you might like to see on your helmet...
Final note you did not cover - where to buy and what kind! Racer's Wholesale http://www.racerwholesale.com/ has many inexpensive options. There's a number of other places online, but prices seem to be controlled - not much variation. You should also really try to find a local place to try them on, if not buy from. This is important not just to determine size, but shape; different brands fit quite differently, and will have different comfort levels for different people with different skull shapes. My Simpson is WAY tighter around the cheeks than my Bells are.
Also, fiberglass vs. kevlar - kevlar is noticeably lighter and more comfortable as a result - but I'd rather have a newer (SA05) fiberglass than an older (SA00), cheaper kevlar one (since I can then use it longer).

Helmet design/type is a matter of comfort and visibilty issues in regards to open/full. If cost is an issue then open will be less expense. Helmets need to be tried on versus buying your size as the manufacturers all differ in fit ie; Bell fits one way Simpson in another, so you need to try out different brands.
As far as cost goes G Force is the best way to go. You can go Kevlar or FG and spend under 300.00 for an SA005. The G Force is widely used by those watching the race budget.

Old racer's adage: If you have a $100 head, buy a $100 helmet.
Lay translation: Buy the absolute best you can afford. Never skimp on safety equipment.
Asking racers about open face -v- full face is like starting the dino oil -v- synthetic oil discussion but I concur on the full face. Simpson makes a full face model that has a big opening that improves peripheral vision (Voyager perhaps?) while providing that jaw/chin/teeth protection that is so important.
And don't forget the HANS. And the NOMEX driver's suit. And the gloves. And the shoes. |

Of course there's very little you can do in the way of head and neck restraint (HANS or others) without at least a 5-point belt system (though you'd be much better off with 6 or 7-point), which pretty much requires at least a rollbar to be done properly. And a race seat. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what type of helmet "the stig" wears on Top Gear?

hm. Here in sweden i dont think your allowed to have full faced helmets in cars with roofs in our smaller racing series. Its due to the larger risk of neck injuries. But as all other thins that has to do with cars yours philosphy is always different to "ours" _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Hmmm... I'd wonder just how much test data that's backed up by. Closed-face helmets do work and are a GREAT idea in closed cars. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Its the swedish association of motorsport who descides theese things. I think max weight is 800grams for open faced helmets. 1500grams for closed face with hans on our national races for roofed cars. They said that its because of the increased amount of neck injuries that they made those weight rules. There are though a lot of different views on this subject.

OK, I understand where they're coming from, yes.
Makes me wonder how much mine weighs... though it's kevlar, not fiberglass, so the lighter (and worth it)... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I can get most race items cheaper than most as I sell them. We have everthing you need for racing. Go to VAS Enterprise site. I have a painted helmet and it looks great. Photos to follow. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
