Dave,
I could have an excellent '78 4 spd for sale if I turn my '78 into a '79 and I'm in eastern Ontario. Where are you?

The first question I have is: How is your car acting up? I thought I had a bad trans in my 77 924, but the howling I heard turned out to be bad bearings in the torque tube, and the binding and vibration I experienced turned out to be a bad CV joint, the trans was still good. I have seen rebuilt trans units in the aftermarket publications, they charge about 1500 US, which is close to what a 924 in good condition would sell for. Junkyards in Portland Oregon charge 200 to 250 for a 4 speed trans. CDN would be a third higher I suppose. I understand that the 4 speeds last a long time, so your best bet might be a junk yard, or someone on this board. I have a trans from a 78 I did not need, if you are interested.

don't even think about rebuilding a 4-speed.
They are almost indestructable especially when sitting behind a US-spec 924 so check the stuff that JvGinPDX mentioned before assuming it's your trannie.
If it really is dead then it would be a good time to swap in an Audi 5-speed. Check the Wanted/For Sale forum to get an idea of what the guys are selling them for. You want the Audi not the Porsche trans. |

Joe, the torque tube bearings cannot be greased. When they die, they make a lot of noise. To change them, you need to drop the trans and the rear axle assembly. Once you have the tube loose, the worst is over. There is a proceedure for this in the technical section. Peace and quiet instead of howling at idle and at speed make it all worth it.

I forgot to mention that the bearings for the torque tube cost me all of 50 dollars for the bearings, and 20 dollars in labor for the machine shop to remove and install the bearings in their 4 holders. The cost is not bad, but the job is a PITA. Some beers make it go less painfully. A good time to do this is when you are pulling the trans or the rear end for some other reason. Clutch time would be ideal.

Joe, if you are going to rebuild the torque tube, I have some hints for you. I can be reached at JvGinPDX@earthlink.com I have some improvments on the proceedure that make it go easier. I reassembled mine vertically while standing on a ladder. E mail me for the details.
