okay when i drive or even when i'm not moving and rev the engine at neutral i hear a sounds that sound like a piece of metal flying around and hitting metal like a tin can or somthing i can hear it under me it is defiantely not coming from the engine but under my seat so i'm guessing maybe a rusty piece of metal in the exhaust pipe flyng around and making the sound? i guess thats why the harder i rev and faster i go the louder it gets. |

Could be a rusted underbody heatshield, or something broken loose in the exhaust internals. You really have to crawl under the car and take a look or listen more closely. (jackstands work good at this point) .... 924s are a little too low for me... |

could it damage my car if i keep on drivingit like this? i don't have the space or the knowledge and tools to do the work myself. i don't kow much about cars so i have ot wait until i have the money to get it checked and fixed at a shop. but i want to know if it is a big problem that i should fix first as there are other problems that i have to fix.
thanks. |

Couldn`t tell you unless I looked at the car...
Which is more pressing in your mind? Fix that first. |

Whoa weird. Tim I have the same thing on my 931. I just had an exhaust manifold replaced. Figured that would fix it. Sure enough though it's still there. I can't pin it down as narrowly as you did but it's definitely not the engine. And it only seems to happen a bit when accelerating but mostly right after I take my foot off the gas or it's idling. Have to take the babe back in this or next week for a new timing belt cover - was gonna have em look at it then. I'll let you know what they say. |

thanks man, weird how you have the same thing, yeah i figured if it comes from under me and when i accelerate it is probably a lose piece of metal flying around somewhere int he exhaust componets. i get the same thing too when i let go of the accelerator i hear it flinging around down there probably cus when you accelerate the air is blowing fast and pinning it on something and then when you let go the air speed decreases and it flings around. i don't know i just thought of that.
let me know what it is in your 931 |

it will probably be just a missing screw or 2 on a heat shield under the car _________________ 3 928s, |

Check the cat. heat sheild. That was a source of vibration for mine in the past. Check for a break in the metal near the sheild mounting bolts, or a missing bolt. _________________ 79 924 Sebring |

Well finally found out what mine was. Thought it was exhaust but just had her in for a new fuel pump relay and the noise I'm hearing is..... the catalytic converter. I guess it's torched - or well on it's way. Mech's suggesting replacement in the next month. UGH! Checked out a few sites and they all seem to be running around $395 or so. Anyone replace one for less? |

I got a better idea, cut it out and weld in a straight through piece of pipe, if you have a visual inspection that you need to worry about take the cat and cut off the bottom piece of the cat, and weld it onto the bottom of the straight pipe to "simulate" the look of the cat, and they will be none the wiser. _________________ 3 928s, |

Yo Lizard you're up late dude. Ya, read a bunch of posts about cuttin the cat out and up etc. But to be honest I'm full on with Fuzzbeaner -- in one post he pointed to the green factor and I do my best to do my best by the enviro. I'm not Green - more Greenish or Greenesque, haha. |

Hey Timstar. Check it out. Could be same deal. In fact, if you got stuff in the exhaust couldn't that be attributable to the cat gone or going bad guys? |

I am always up late, if I am not tired when i go to bed then I wont sleep all night but anyway, in regards to the cat, the 924 is a very efficent engine when working properly, the catalitic converter also looses efficently VERY fast, they old work at there peak efficency for a max of 10,000km which is less than 1 year of driving for me so in all actuallity I wouldnt be overly worried about it.
