|
|
As of July, Tirerack.com will be carrying a new DOT-approved competition tire - excuse me, tyre - from AVON Tyres:
http://www.avontyresusa.com/tires/tech_r.html
As an example, the Tirerack price for these in a 205/50/15 size is $155, vs $173 for the Hoosier R3S03 or $198 for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups (of which I currently have a set).
This seems a very intriguing option for those of us who aren't setting out to win races, just to keep the cars on track with a minimum of cost. Anyone on the other side(s) of the pond have any info about these or Avon competition tYres in general? _________________ Vaughan Scott

| Just took a look at the link. They look like the current F1 tires. Dont take your car on track in the rain with these! :O |

Well, naturally, they're dry tires, as are the R3S03 and 04. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'm curious too how they perform. I still love my Hankooks, though. Good for at least 3 seconds off Khumo and way cheaper. Still need to get a set of rain tires for #35. Was looking at a set of street tires like Toyo or something. Any suggestions? I need to work within a budget.

Hard to say. A dry tire is good up until you've got standing water; then we run Dirt Stockers. A lot of PCA guys run intermediates, but I've never seen IT front-runners run them. I got a used set of Dirt Stockers cheap. Used em once. The thing is, you don't even use a full-wet tire but maybe 2 times a year, so they last forever. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughn - how do you like the Michelins? Awfully expensive.
Dirt Stockers are not legal in PCA. Reason that crowd doesn't use them.
Jeremy, the Dirt Stockers are the ticket. So long as the turbo is not finished up I have a set you can use at Summit if it gets wet. One thing about them; if you are out and it drys up they will go away in no time. Chris and Dave Derecola made the wrong call a CMP couple years back and it quit raining during the race. I believe they both finally just came into the paddock. _________________ John

John thanks for the offer. We'll talk as we get closer to the race. I may just get a set of street tires. I agree with you that we only use them probably once or twice a season but it's better to have than and not need them than to need them and not have them.

John-Jerry team has a Hoosier. JJ is doing lots of things on both cars. To keep up these guys, I got to try this tyre.
But, TireRack doesn't have them yet. _________________ R.I.P.:a 924 ITA race car |

I haven't run the Michelins more than just scrubbing them in, really - which sucks, they were new last year. They're also skinnier than my Hoosiers, so not exactly an A-B comparison.

Hey Ryogi, I'm more concerned with keeping up with you now that your getting lighter in #39. Were still running Hankooks and love them. We have two sets, plus a set of older Khumo's with some life on them. I hope our tire situation is ok for the rest of the season. I did notice that Toyo has a race tire in our size. Price is competitive with Hankook (about $130). I would love a set of Hoosiers. Maybe down the road just to see how much time I can pick up verses Hankook. We do know that Hankook is 3-5 seconds faster at Watkins Glen and about 3-4 seconds at Summit than Khumo.

I think if they were handy I'd try them. Brian Zalner won the 44Cup on them year before last.
That said, I don't think they come is the little 14inch size we need. _________________ John

If you're looking for a decent street-type rain tire (not race compound) I might recommend the RE950 from Bridgestone. I run these on my street car (maxima) in 225/50/16 (dk whether they are available in 14 or 15" sizes) and have found two surprizing features of this tire.
First, when at full tread depth, their resistence to hydroplaning or loss of traction is amazing. They just hang on. Second, now that I have some 25K on them, they've worn into the "UNI-T" layer of rubber compound which I find to be even stickier in the rain than many race compounds. (UNI-T apparently is the way they market their multi-layered tread compound...) I can absolutely put the hammer down in the max in the rain and she just takes off, drive deep into the turns, threshhold brake hard and never does the abs kick in, and I experience excellent stability with predictable slip angles and gentle breakaway to understeer when the wheel is hard over in a turn -- never felt anything like them. Good stuff.
If they come in whatever size you need and you're looking for a non-race DOT tire, I would recommend them. |

I've seen some discussion further on the Avon tyres on the IT forums. Sounds like they are a dual-purpose tyre, good for autox or road racing, and sound very soft. As such, they may not be well suited for road racing, might not get jack for lifetime out of them. Sounds like we may want to wait and let others try them first... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'm really interested in hearing about the Toyo RA tires. They might be our next choice. I love trying different race tires
