I read on the 924/944/968 FAQ that the cam timing and balance shaft belts should be replaced every 45K miles, and to expect to pay between 300-500 to have this done.

Any opinions on those figures? Is 45K about right for replacing those two belts? Has anyone gone for a looooong time without replacing them?

Thanks.

myself i would recomend to change the timing belt...what kind of car do u have? a 924? what year?
if it's a 92n/a and the belt breaks usually nothing wrong happends but if it's a 944 then your valves will be gone for good...again if i'd be you I'd change them...the timing isn't that expensive, it's a labor that is expensive, i have changed my on my 924 and no problem there only there's !@#%$load of problems with everything else but that's another story

It's an '87 924S, with exactly 50,064 miles. The previous (and original) owner never had those belts changed.

I just recently purchased it, and that will probably be the first thing I do to it.

with 924's it's a home project, with others you need a tensioning tool which cost about $300-400, if i'd plan to keep the car for a while in a long run it would be better to get this tool, if you don't think you'll have the car for that long then go to the diller and get them to do it or something

Just to give you a clear answer, your '87 IS an interference engine. So if the timing belt breaks, you're looking at an expensive repair. Same engine as the 944. The early 924 NA was NOT.

If you've got 50k+ with the same belts, I believe the common wisdom is to change them right away. Some would say to not even drive it to the mechanic. I guess it depends on how lucky you feel.
Good Luck.

There are literally 924S's littering the countryside with smashed heads from timing belt/pulley/etc failures. I guess that's one of the reasons the 924NA is so nice. It's not holding a 'gun' at your head.

change the belt and tensioner and you might as well do the front engien seals and waterpump. it is a butt load of money but it saves alot on the labor to do it all now versus later.

Can we keep this 924S stuff in the 924S section Please! Thats why we have a 924S section
