Whether "good, bad or indifferent", I'm committed to the project and will have it done this weekend. I'll never know for sure if it provides any significant performance improvement, but if nothing else, I'll have the satisfaction of having done the job.

Common sense tells me that larger passages = less resistance = improved airflow, but an NA engine would benefit more than a turbo and a turbo would still benefit at those times before the turbo's up to speed.
As far as the idea of "bigger is better", there's probably a trade-off involved that's similar to what happens at the other end (with wide open exhaust producing more HP and a more restricted exhaust giving more torque). There must be optimum port and plenum sizes for different size engines and applications - but this is just common sense talking again. I'm not up on the details and physics of this stuff... _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

OK, the project turned out just fine. All I have to do now is to figure out a way to "ream out" the inside of the intake manifold. I think I can wad up a steel wool pad and pull it through a couple of times to clean it out (something like running a patch through a rifle bore).
Click the image to go to my photo gallery of a dozen or so photos of the work as it progressed.
I also "home engineered" a valve lapping setup to face and lap the valves ( http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?p=77102 ). _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |
