Ok, its Rob again. So I went and drove the 931 that I was talking about. Sort of. The battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge so if it died we had to rejump it. It started in only a few seconds and once it got warm it would run very well for a minute or so and then die. On the road it wouldn't rev at all, it kept cutting out when you tried to accelerate. This is a serious dilemma. I want the car but I want to be able to get it running WELL for less than $500 (not including the purchase price). It seems like maybe a vacuum leak or possibly fuel injection. It could just be just a dirty fuel filter. Okay so my next question is, if I buy it and I can't get it running right for cheap, is anyone interested in buying it from me for exactly what I put into it? I love the car. I just don't have a ton of money right now. Thanks,
Rob

It may be as simple as the battery problem. If it is shorted, it may be drawing the voltage down to a point that the electronic ignition is not putting out enough spark. It could be anything in the fuel system. You are probably on the right track with the vacuum leaks. However, I am with the majority in that these cars can be very expensive to maintain, and are generally not reliable. If this car is going to be your daily driver, and you don't have a back-up, you may want to look at an NA. I have had my 931 since 1985, and I love it. But it has always been my toy. I drive it every day in the summer when it is running. But, I have a Toyota truck that is my dependable vehicle. I put about $100 a year in maintenance on the Toyota, and about $2000 a year into the Porsche. That's just in parts. I do all of my own maintenance.

Well my dad is actually hauls cars with an 18 wheeler for a living, sometimes he is in that area, so if he happens to be over there and I happen to have the money and you happen to want to sell it, I'll buy it
no promises though

You should at very least go over the basic tune-up items covered in the FAQ (link above). When I picked up my 931, we wasted a lot of time with a battery that was dead.

You seem to think the fuel injection components are expensive. Only if they need replacing, which is not common. Review what the FAQ has to say about reviving an abandoned car - about cleaning the fuel tank, etc.

Chances are it just needs properly set timing, maybe mixture (though don't mess with this first), clean injectors and fuel filter, that sort of thing. I could probably get it running decently in a day or two. No, that doesn't help you, I'm in Detroit, but they tend not to be that psychotic. These are not British cars! They are way too logical.

Read the FAQ, play with it, make your call; if you decide to pass, then forward the info to the rest of us... I can think of a few people up that way who need a 931!

I'm with Numbers on this one. A few years ago, I was driving at night just a few miles from home when the engine started to miss and I noticed the dash and headlights dimming. I turned off the lights right away and made sure everything else electrical was turned off and headed home. The engine continued to miss and got worse all the way, but; I just made it. The problem was a bad alternator. It died and stopped charging the battery and of course the battery then slowly died too.
