HI all,
its a strange feeling when the gearshift breaks off in your HAND!
It happened at work..of course no tools..limped it home.
Drilled out the metal where the pin connects up to the tranny shift arm where it was broken off. Drilled through the shift leaver completely and put through a combination of 2 washer bolt and nut....lock tighted.
All is well now. At first I saw $$$ float by....
so if this ever happens to anyone else it can be fixed with out changing out the shift lever.

| Happened to me, luckly just getting out of the driveway. A had a freind of a freind who is a professional welder do it properly (looked as if the previous owner had done it in the past) and its been fine. Perfectly aligned. Also, to deaden the wrattle a bit (which there was there at certain rpm) I wrapped a small peice of ducttape around the extending rod, then slowly worked the shiftlever on nice and tight. Works very well. |

Noisy? really?
I actually find its the opposite I find it much more quiet and shifting seems better too now. I am begining to think the piece that broke was on its way out for a long time.

When I had my '82 I was playing around with my buddy in his GLI and went for a downshift when the shifter fell off in my hand!!! Needless to say I freaked out and didn't know what to do. I pulled up the shift boot and found the C clip came off the end. I connected to two pieces back together and limped to a hardware store to buy a new C-clip. After that it was fine. But imagine being 18 and have to think about buying a new tranny. That's the first thing that came to mind. _________________ Former Porsche 924 owner.

My drove a pinto when she was a kid that was a stick shift. She was driving along and the entire lever came out in her hand. She did have the $200 to fix it so she superglued it back in. Worked great for a couple years and then she sold it. Personally, i wouldn't have the warm and fuzzies about driving when my shifter is superglued. _________________ 90 944 S2

So it wore down to such a thin little cone shaped pin, that it snapped off and broke?
Is a common problem, but if you use a bolt, won't the threads be sharp and cause more wear? I'd line or wrap those threads up.
Sometimes if the C-clip on there is not on fully, it may be too loose. You can bend it tighter with pliers so that when you snap it on, it's a snugger fit. _________________ 82 931 |

I had a 63 Pontiac tempest with the trans axel and torque tube. Gearshift fell off and dropped out the bottom. I used 2 big hose clamps and a block of wood to put it back together. That was a slant 4 too ... I wonder if that is where Porsche got the idea _________________ Glenn Neff

No it didnt wear down...it just seems that the metal fatigued somehow and just let go.
On another note use my fix only as "tempory" with the vibration from driving the clip can fall off....also Lock whashers/nuts loosen anyway even with locktite..
