What are the external codes or clues that visibly distinguish an early 125 hp Euro NA 924 engine from an early 95 hp US type?

Thanks,
Al

I am not a pro on the subject and can only speak from my own limited experience. On my 76 924 the I.D. tag beside the battery compartment has the XK stamped in it. According to the manual the code for Great Britain and Aus. was XJ also a 125 hp. In Can. & U.S. XH,XF are 95 hp XG,XE are 110hp VC is 1980 on 115 hp. If you want to go by specfic block casting #'s which I gather is what you really want you'll have to talk to the more tech. advanced. You must suspect an engine swap some time in the past?

No, I am just curious about these very early 924s. Mine is number 821, and the first 5000+ were Rest of World only cars, according to the FAQ. Since 76 was a noncatalyst year, I would theorize that some, most or even all of the early noncatalyst 76 924s were 125 hp Euro engines, since there was no need to worry about the EPA, purportedly the main reason the US got stuck with the 95 hp wheezer. Wishful thinking, maybe...

BTW, the engine casting number (visible on the driver's side rear top of the engine underneath the intake manifold) is 046103021A, not sure about zeroes vs. the letter O.

Where EXACTLY is the area with the engine code you mentioned? Mine has a generous amount of rustproofing material all over the place, which may have to be removed to find it.

Thanks,
Al

I am not the biggest fan of the hanes manual, but on page 7 it has a photo of the tag. In case you don't have one I will explain where it is located. On the passenger side, there is a rail just below where the fender bolts on...directly beside the battery location. An aluminum tag 1 1/2 x 5". On my tag it has a box that has stamped typ 924 and the box beside that has XK stamped in it. Surly someone will read this post and rescue us from this brain teaser.

the "924 Chassis and Engine Codes " link at Darrin's site at http://members.tripod.com/darrin_smith/porsche/924home.html is a magic decoder ring for the VIN and engine codes.

My VIN is "924 9 1 0 3353" which tells me that it's a type 924 (really) model year 9 (1979) version 1 (Europe) serial number 3352.

My engine number is "XJ 001708" which tells me the engine was built for model years 1978 to 1980 for the Europe/Rest of World Right Hand Drive cars.

The structure of the VINs changed 3 times during the life of the 924. The chart makes it easy to decode your numbers if you have a pre-1980 car, the VIN coding after that does not include the version/market but you get that info from the engine number.

Also, the "model outline" at http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq.html gives lots of good info. Between the two sites you should get a good idea of what you got.

Vaughan,

the link to the Model Outline on the "Models and History" page is out of date.

I found it, after removing the engine from the car last night. My car doesn't have the tag depicted in the Haynes manual. It instead has the code stamped into the metal of the block itself, at the same location. Was initially hard to see due to surface grime.
