can anyone recommend an expreienced and reputable turbo rebuilder. i can easily remove the turbo and ship it to have it rebuilt i just don't have any ideas as to who does a good rebuild. my mechanic worked on my 924 but would probably have another shop do the work on the turbo and charge me for the middleman. i trust his work but i know he problably wouldn't be doing the work on the turbo itself.

There's always Turbonetics... I think they're at www.turbonetics.com, but don't quote me...

Try the dealer, I bought a rebuilt one with a 2 year Porsche warranty for around $800.

I've seen rebuild kits go for about $100, but I personally would be be real leary of doing the work. Those things spin incredibly fast, and the balance is absolutely critical. I have been told that even by scraping some of the carbon off of some turbine blades, and not others can cause the thing to self destruct.

I searced for months to find someone to rebuild my euro-spec and finally came across the company below. The POC's name given me was "Bob Pye". They did a 10 day turn-around and charged me (I think) $535. One year warranty. Looks like good work (mine was totally siezed up) but I don't know for sure, as my car is still not back on the road. They apparantly do some work for PCA racing, maybe some of the racers on the Board can comment.

The car is back on the road again, and the turbo performs well.

Has anyone rebuilt their own?
I was a little afraid to, so I brought it to a friend who specialized in rebuilding turbos in the big trucks. He thought he could handle it, so I trusted him to do it.
I watched every step of the rebuild, (he did it with me), and to be honest... if I would have desided to do it myself in the first place I'm sure it would have come out right. It's a very easy job compaired to removing the thing.
As long as it's taken apart slowly and you pay close attention to what your doing, you're golden. At least in my case.... nothing was really worn inside so it went smoothly.
2 tips though...
1. take a center punch and mark the housing on both sides of the seal to insure you bolt it together at the right angle.
2. coat your new housing seal with vassiliene before spinning it onto the housing. this will not only help to keep the thing from twisting when you put it on, but it will also help it to seal, (from what I was told).
Once again.... take your time, and clean every little part. I've had no problems with mine... I wish I could say that about the rest of the car.

You haven't had any probs with your turbo at all? I would think that would have thrown it off balance.

No problems.
Everything fit nice and snug. It was even microed out....(or whatever you call it), it was well with-in specs... though I can't remember what they were.
At first I thought the turbo was setting at a bit of an angle and was incorrectly lined up and wasn't sealing in the intake tube correctly.
Come to find out it was all because the intake tube wasn't bolted down at the bottom and was raising... oh-well.
All I can say is I wouldn't be too afraid of rebuilding it the next time on my own... though an extra set of hands getting the thing out would still be very helpful.
Porsche put these cars together TIGHT!

Aaron

Yeah, ever mess with wiring under the dash. I am a pretty small guy only 5'5" and i have a hard time fitting under there. I swear these cars were built my midgets with tiny ass hands. Takes a half hour to change just the spark plugs for me. I only get like a 1/4 turn rotation before i run outta room.

Yeah i figured that about the turbo. There is so much stuff missing from the car or i had to rig something aftermarket cause the PO just never put it back in soemwhere else. I only have one radiator fan!!! I also now have a nice copper pipe in my coolant hose because those pesky coolant hoses like to burn straight through when near that nice hot turbo.
