Summoning the porsche parents yet again

I am going through with rebuilding the 4 lug drums for the time being because I can't afford doing the 5 lug swap at this time. If I find that this rebuild will involve a lot of NLA parts as I get further into it, then I'll have to save and get the 5 lug conversion rear end. I'm mostly trying to get her actually drivable without using the ebrake so we can actually test drive her and see how the car behaves engine wise.

Anyways, looking for parts for the drum rebuild and was wondering if yall knew anywhere that had the correct fitting parts as I've seen some of the stuff for the front brakes are not great. I basically need everything except the drum cylinders as I've acquired those already. I found this spring kit on rock auto and was wondering if anyones actually used it before or not https://drive.google.com/file/d/1edwp0vTN9Oj3G-o2MHmyXHulTLPPLxh0/view?usp=sharing

Virtually all of the rear drum components are from the early VW Bug, try a supplier of these parts.

I've not used that kit, and am not generally a fan of Beck Arnley parts, but seems like those should work... although I've not usually needed to replace the tensioning springs, when I have done drums, just the springs and cups that hold the shoes to the backing plate... though for the price, might as well have 'em all.

Good to see you can still get drums as well as a good selection on shoes...

Nothing is NLA but some are a bit expensive:
The drums themselves are expensive if they need replaced.
The backing plates are expensive if they need replaced.
The short handbrake cable (left side on a LHD?) is expensive if it’s sticking and needs replaced.

Everything else is cheap and available.

How much did you price up a 5-stud conversion at, out of interest?

If I go to the 5 lug for the rear I would also want to do the front so I'm not mismatched. Based on what I was able to find, I could get a good rear end for anywhere from $500-1k but I would still have to replace the brake components that come with it (if they do). Same thing for the front end but it seems to be a bit more expensive. Brake components based on combining together all of my shopping carts for the 5 lug also came out to around $750. I would also have to get a new mc (and maybe brake booster?), rerun the lines, and find new wheels. I'm very much regretting not pricing out what the 5 lug pieces from the donor 88 I yoinked a lot of stuff from as it probably has been stripped of it by now

For the 4lug rebuild, the parts also come out to be like $750ish maybe more maybe less because I probably will refresh the front brakes, I have to redo most of the lines anyway, and probably have to refresh the mc seals. I haven't taken the backing plates off to see what pieces I need on the inside because to be quite honest we might have to demolish the plate to get it off as rust has taken over the entire thing from a leaky cylinder. We're trying to not leave her in air jail at our friends for more than a day or two at a time since he works out of his shop and I haven't found backing plates yet....so now I'm here trying to order parts based on the PET PNs and consulting with yall on if I'm finding actually good parts & rebuild kits (and praying I can return them if the pieces end up being good on Poppy)

As far as fronts go, I just pulled these parts off my '82 924 turbo (a tree fell on the car). What I kept are the front spindles, calipers backing plates and hubs. You are welcome to them if you decide to upgrade.

Supplier in UK, items also refer to VW parts used in 924

I fitted T4 Kombi drums combined with early 90's Audi A4 calipers upfront. I also converted the hydraulics to a standard front and rear split.
Brakes are now very good.
Car is used exclusively for racing.

Awesome, thank you!! Using that I was able to find a different spring repair set, not sure if this is a better or worse brand than Beck Arnley https://www.partsplaceinc.com/vw-beetle-rear-brake-spring-kit-2365.html

I'll have to keep the Kombi drums in mind, thanks Daniel!

Stupid question time:

Do these have both brake shoes and parking brake shoes for the rear drums? I've been searching through the PET for the drums and I only see the normal brake shoe on there, but online I've been finding both brake shoes and parking brake shoes supposedly for the rear drums. The parts are different so I know they're different things, but not sure if I need both or not

No, with rear drums the main (service) brake shoes and drums also function as the park brake/E brake.

The park brake shoes you are seeing are for the rear discs, which have the drum-in-hat park brake configuration.

So you only need the regular brake shoes.

Thanks Vaughan!! I almost have all my important bits ordered I think or know where I can acquire them if they end up being bad on Poppy (mainly the backing plate and drums because why tf are even used bug labeled backing plates so expensive and waiting to see the condition of the drums before I order new)

Anyone have any tips on getting potentially stubborn backing plates off other than an air chisel or fire?

Mine always came off with a hammer. Try to hit them around the base where they mount to the axle obviously maybe using a block of wood so you don't bend them.

I repaired mine by welding and they were fine after that. They are pretty thick metal but they get chewed around the adjuster holes so I just welded in a couple of washers to replace the holes.
