Hi everyone, I'm a (1977) 924 owner as of two weeks and a board member as of yesterday.

I have been attempting to troubleshoot my temperature gauge so I have a heads up before I overheat my engine!

I have removed the wire connection from the temperature sender and held it against the block, and the temperature gauge goes into the max and stays there steadily. However, when I (securely) attach the wire connection to the temperature sender, the temperature gauge flip flops back and forth quite randomly between left of the white bar, where I would expect it to be (middle), the maximum and everywhere in between. Sometimes it flip flops and sometimes it just doesn't move from left of the white bar.

Before I drop the money, this is obviously a faulty coolant temperature sender, right? Is taking it out and cleaning it gonna help?
As a bonus, any suggestions on what one to buy and ship to New Zealand (affordability!)

Cheers

The temperature sensor is just a thermistor. It should return resistance values in line with the link below.

I would suspect a problem at the gauge itself. If you have a variable resistor you could test it.

Take the gauge cluster out and clean all the connectors. Also do the same on the temp sender connections. Mine did the same for a while, I had no idea if they car was overheating or not!
