Hello,
I tried searching for this information and didnt see anything related.
When the engine comes up to temperature the gauge goes crazy back and forth from cool to hot (bouncing).
Is there a remedy for this.
Also the drivers side fan comes on, however the passenger side does not.
Are they both supposed to come on simultaneously?
or is the passenger side fan used with the A/C only?
Thanks. _________________ 1981 931 |

Sounds like an electrical connection issue - not shocking, the single wire can get damaged, might be only holding on with one strand.
The temp sender is located at the back of the head, under a couple of coolant hoses... someone here probably has a nice pic of it... I'd start by inspecting that wire. If you touch it to ground, the gauge should go to max hot...
The sender itself is really basic and pretty bulletproof in my experience; I've never seen one fail, after decades, just bad wiring.
If you switch on the AC, both fans should come on. Check connections on the fans themselves, otherwise the next most likely problem is one of the two AC relays being dead (since they do power the rad fans on the AC cars). _________________ Vaughan Scott
