I have been working on a 1977 924 that I got cheap with a blown engine. This is my first 924 (and my first engine swap) - so I am looking to make this as painless as possible.

I have since learned that I have a true '77 engine currently (not a 77 1/2). When shopping around for an engine from junk yards, I see that the true '77 engines are much more expensive than the 77 1/2 engines (double the cost).

Are these 2 engines "direct" replacements? Can I buy a '77 1/2 engine and drop it right in for the '77 engine with no issues?

If not, what are the issues I will run into? From what I have read, my concerns are mostly around the exhaust I believe because of some changes in emissions/cats etc etc

Thanks in advance!

A 77 engine (crank) takes different main bearings which are unavailable. No reason not to go with a later engine up to '82 in the states.

Understood, thanks for the info, I appreciate it! Just didn't want to purchase an engine and then be stuck with a ton of unexpected work!
