|
|
Hello all.
Looking to replace an original (42 y/o) ignition coil on a US '81 S2.
Wondering if there are any upgrades exist?
Thanks _________________ 996 Turbo ('04)

I had a MSD Blaster 2 coil sitting around, so I put that in my car. It runs fine and no issues I can tell, but I haven't put any significant miles on it. The coil that was in it, and I'm not sure it was original, reads in at 1.0 ohm primary resistance, where the Blaster shows 0.9. It's a popular coil for V8 applications; I'm not sure it's meant for six or four-cylinders, but MSD doesn't give any warnings against that in the instructions. Time will tell, but being almost the same resistance tells me it should be ok. Mine's an '80, so it's the old setup with a resistor wire to the coil. If that's the setup you've got, I think any generic performance coil should work as long as it's not one meant to only be run on a capacitive discharge setup. If you've got DITC, then I'm not so sure except to say you could run into trouble if you put something in with too low primary resistance. I do see that they used a different coil with DITC, but I can't find any specs on it. _________________ 1980 931 diamond in the rough |

Thanks, I have the Blaster 2 on my 951, so def no issues on 4cyl applications.
As far as DITC is concerned, I'll have to look further into that.
Thanks for the feedback _________________ 996 Turbo ('04)

I found that the Accel Super Stock Coil 8140 in my car was leaking oil from the top.
What causes that? Too much heat? Excessive voltage? Just went bad?
I replaced it with a Blaster 2, works great. 81 931 running 80 engine/ignition. _________________ 1981 Porsche 931 w/S1 engine & g31 transmission. Water-cooled intercooler |

My 81 original coil tests ok on primary resistance but only 3.06 ohms on secondary resistance. Could this contribute to a hot start issue? Should it be replaced if it starts great when cold and for 20 minutes when hot?
Thanks! |

If it were me, I'd replace the coil based on that, assuming it's original, or if it's a replacement of questionable quality. That said, hot starting issues are far more likely to be fuel related; I remember reading somewhere that it's because of fuel vaporizing in the injector lines. Mine just has to be cranked for 10-20 seconds - probably not good for the starter, and it loses you some style points, but pretty well within "I can live with it" territory. How does the car run other than the hot start issues? _________________ 1980 931 diamond in the rough |

It starts cold perfectly and run like a new car. Shit it off hot, it starts great for 10 minutes. Starts rough at 15 and doesn’t want to start at 20 until it cools off. Injectors, fuel filter, check valve and accumulator are all new. System and running pressure are in spec. I get 9.1 ohms resistance on the WUR and it starts great cold with the cold start valve disconnected. I get no voltage at the cold start valve which maybe means the thermo time switch is bad? Vacuum lines were replaced as well. Frustrating to have such an issue when the rest of the car is perfect. Suggestions? |
