The snap ring you can see in the photo came off, so once you change into one of the top three gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) you are stuck in it.

I'm 100 miles from home with no jack stands, no garage, no ramps.

Alternatively I could stick it in gear and try to drive 100 miles. I can pull off in third and I can do 50mph at 4000+ RPM, but if I get stopped on a hill I will be stuck there and would have to crawl under and put it in low gear... in insane UK traffic.

I assume to get a new one on I'd need to disconnect gear lever, take out the pinch bolt that connect the shaft to the linkage, slide the shaft forward in the car, then slide the new snap ring up the linkage into its groove?

Does anyone have the size of the snap ring?

Does anyone know if this is feasible without having to drop the exhaust?

I doubt there is any bodge that will just get me home?

And of course the shift linkage is £400 on EBay for a metal rod and a chunk of plastic, these cars sure aren't for brokies like me any more, being priced out of ownership...

Sure, if it works is it really a bad idea?

A piece of string out back up into the cabin, yank it hard to get out of 1st and 3rd.
Your idea is probably better!

I found the circlip still on the shaft! It was jammed into the rubber dust cover and I had not felt it at first with numb fingers. I managed to slide it back along and into the groove... I think.

I suppose this will happen again and with increasing frequency though, the groove or the snap ring must have an angle worn on it. Couldn't really see anything, did all this by feel.

The permanent fix would be to lathe a new groove into the linkage with a new snap ring and some spacer washers. Or to widen the existing groove and use two snap rings.

At least I have gears again. The string idea is great, could route it through the drain hole in the spare tyre well even. Hopefully it won't come to that. Going to be SUPER careful changing into 2nd/4th/reverse from now on. Was a crunchy and overly quick 3rd to 2nd change that did it, I think.
