OK, this request might seem a bit weird, but hear me out.
1. I have a complete 2.0 NA engine sitting in the engine stand.
2. I can get hold of a 944 complete (minus engine) in horrid shape.
3. 924s/44 2.5 engines are very expensive over here, and almost unobtainium ... think thousands $ for something of unknown condition.
I am contemplating the unspeakable - putting the 2.0 in the 944 (with Fuel Injection and a Turbo of course).
I figure 250hp is about all I need as the car will be as stripped out as much as possible.
What do I need to think about to make this swap happen?
Thanks in advance for your counsel ... _________________ '81 Porsche 924 NA

Why not, i much prefer the design of the 2.0, its a much more robust desig. They work very well with boost, so with EFi, modern turbo and a stronger clutch 250-300hp will not be that hard to do. Only downside is the lack of smooth running, if you care about that _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Thanks Cedric.
How do engine mounts differ between the two cars?
Will the 924 NA sump clash with the 944 crossmember?
Can I "de-power" the 944 steering rack?
Would I use a 924 clutch with a 944 clutch disc? The clutch frankenstein perplexes me a bit ... _________________ '81 Porsche 924 NA

The 924 engine is suspended in the engine bay. You would have to make your own mounts to fit.
The 924 engine sump is built the same way as the 944. Very similar design.
You can De-power the rack. There is a forum about it I think on Pelican on the correct way to do it.
You would have to convert to a 931 Flywheel and clutch set up toe match up to the 944 Torque tube and shaft. The 924 has a 20MM shaft and 944 has 25mm if I remember right.
Hope this helps out. |

You’re doing it all wrong.
With all of that effort just make use a more modern engine… that junkyards are full of them at the moment. What cars/engines from the VW/Audi family are popular in Australia? _________________ ---

I know I’m a little late to the thread, but I actually did this and believe it or not it’s a nightmare, getting a clutch that works is a huge pain, you will likely have multiple things dangling from your engine, the mounts are hard to fabricate, and ultimately once you’re done absolutely no one will want your car. It’s kind of unfortunate but I did it and I learned my lesson. You’re better off putting it into a 924 chassis |

Thanks all. I did end up getting a 2.5 at a great price, so going in that direction.
I do agree that (when I didn't have an engine) perhaps a 1.8 would have been a better solution ... or a K24. _________________ '81 Porsche 924 NA
