Getting my head put back together and it being my first time it seems to be going pretty good, got all the springs in with retainers and tappets and am going to attempt the tappets and cam tomorrow once more . I got my cam installed according to the book and it will not turn over more than inch or so before it gets stuck and wont move(no the valves weren't pressed up against the bench lol). Im a newbie with these head designs and am assuming my problems lays in the tappets not being adjusted with the little hex key screw? Or maybe the orientation of the cam was wrong when Installed but the book never mentioned anything about it... I know you must check for clearance between tappet and cam lobe but the lobe has pressed the tappet down below where I can get at it. Somebody please fill in my missing gaps of knowledge...Cheers _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (not started)

Two things to check.
1. Are the cam caps on the right direction, they are easy to reverse. As I recall there is a mark on them that has to be on a certain side. Someone else will have to chime in on that.
2. Hopefully on a NA you only have the approximately 3/8" thick rotators beneath the springs on the exhaust. _________________ Mike

Well I thought I was seriously screwed but it seems that I have managed to squeak by. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I started playing stupid and took it all apart again... What a PITA. After it was stripped I put just the cam in and torqued it down and it was happy spinning. Hindsight tells me I should start every head build like this. With the cam spinning happy I took it out and started to inspect all my buckets and the holes they ride in. My problem seemed to be that the bucket was getting stuck somehow and not being able to travel to max drop. After disassembly and checking I learned how first off I installed the valve guide seals wrong and that was creating one problem along with my number 7 tappet would not sit down in the hole past the height they sit at when you put them in on top of the valve. No obvious imperfections but something was wrong with it for sure because any other tappet would slide right in all the way down. I had a bunch of good tappets from a turbo head I tore down and am planning solid lifters for so I robbed one from that and bobs your uncle she's happy as a lark! Yes I know this shouldn't be done but I can't come up with the change for a new one from Porsche... _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (not started)
