|
|
hi all, apologies for all of the "need help with..." posts lately. Clearly, I need help. 1982 NA
My left and right turn signals are blinking fast. The hazards blink at a normal speed. All bulbs appear to be working.
I inspected all the bulbs, they have been cleaned/sanded, they are all working, and all are incandescent with the correct wattage — if anything there is what seems to be a 21W in the rear left where a 5W should be.
All the relevant fuses seem to be working.
I've sanded and cleaned the pins on the turn signal stalk (also wiper and high beam stalk pins), applied a bit of dielectric grease.
I'm lost with the wiring diagram: I've been staring at it for days but it spans a few different sections between the switch/relay, dash lights, front, and rear signal lights. I just haven't been able to figure it out.
Side note: there are disconnected wires for the side markers bunched up with the front signal bulbs. They receive voltage only when the light switch is on, and I tested the left one does not get voltage when fuse 14 (side marker left + engine bay light) is removed. It would seem a PO deleted the side markers but left the wires just hanging there. Any chance that could be the issue? If so how can I remediate that?
Could a faulty relay possibly cause this? If so, how would I test my relay?
Any help with debugging this would be massively appreciated. Some help understanding the flow of voltage would be helpful as well. _________________ George

It was reporter that different blinker relays behave strange (like yours). Some work with LED, some don’t. Just from top of my head.
As these are working in general, just the speed is wrong, I’d start with switching the blinker relay to a different / new one. _________________ ---

It seems like you've answered your own question! The front sidemarkers being removed will cause the lights to blink fast as they are a part of the circuit which expects their resistance.. you should be able to reinstall sidemarker lights in the correct position to remedy this issue. _________________ 1980 Porsche 931

I had a feeling the sidemarkers were the issue but was unable to confirm myself. I will need to source bulb sockets of some kind for the side marker lights. I wonder if there is a way to properly delete them and fix the turn signal circuit. _________________ George

Install a resistor instead of a bulb? EU did not have side markers so maybe there is a different blinker relay that works fine? Just an idea. _________________ ---

I put a 3893 (4W) bulb between those wires and the light came on when the light switch was on, but it did not affect the speed of the turn signal at all. _________________ George
