The bolt on the rear trailing arm broke off when removing the drum brake backing plate. I drilled this out and tried using an EZ out (bolt extractor) but I haven’t been able to get it out yet. I used a tap handle to screw the EZ out but the chuck of the tap handle broke instead.

It is drilled out a little bit off center so I’m worried if i use a larger drill bit I will destroy the threads, and if I need to remake threads with a helicoil the hole won’t be centered properly.

What would you do in this situation?

I'd use a Dremel with a metal burr and see if you can reduce the hole of the old bolt a bit further, so that basically only the threads remain. After that remove the remaining piece with a small iron pick.

Alternatively you could also try torching the remainder red hot, it may come loose.

You seam to have drilled the hole pretty centered and big. You may be able to pick the threads or knock them out with a sharp punch.
A tap might be able to grab and turn the remains out the right way.

It needs to be perfectly centered, which is easier said than done.

In the past i have used a set of needle/round files to carefully enlarge an off center hole to the point where you can pick out the remaining threads with a pick and run a tap through. Time consuming but it works.
