My ('82 924 NA 4 lug) rear drum brake backing plates are in terrible shape. I am hoping these VW backing plates that I got will be suitable replacements — they have the same part number and look identical so far. The adjusting stars are completely seized on as well so I will be replacing them.

In the PET I see there is a leaf spring (924 80-85 PET: illustration 603-00 #2; part num 211 609 185) which I found at a VW supplier, but it says it needs welding?

I couldn't find any info in the Haynes manual, workshop manual, or online. The workshop manual (Vol 3; pg 46-8 ) has a rear drum diagram but they don't point out a leaf spring in the diagram.

Anyone got any advice on this leaf spring?

After a closer inspection of the replacement backing plate I have, I believe its already welded on.

Found a picture on VW forum as well. Should be all good

Yup, needs welding, mine are broken as well on one side. Didn't see it as an issue. I think the whole rear brake assembly is identical to some VW bugs, so assume the backing plate works as well. The drums certainly do.

Thanks Riggard, did you replace rear drums? Can’t find Porsche spec drums in Canada but there is a great VW supplier here. If you have a drum that fits an 82 924 for VW I would love to know

I just bought a set of drums from Porsche Spares in the UK. Shipping is pricy, but that's due to the weight. (Porsche 924 2.0 NA 4 stud rear drum NEW 477 501 615 A Brembo)
