I'm rebuilding a 1982 S2 engine and have been on the hunt for a cam and mechanical followers. I thought I found my winner when I came across piper cams but after a quick chat with a rep there he said that the S2 cam is different from the S1. Can anyone confirm or give some input.

yeah the cams are all basically the same. there is a very early cam that i believe was directly from the audi 100. please keep us updated on what you do for lifters. i still have a good set but am always looking for options. _________________ ive saved alot of 924's

He needs some further education.....
All stock 924 cams are the same. Stock cam is already good for turbos, especially stock and mild tune. Avoid high lift/duration aimed at NA use and not turbo. I run a 270 Piper in my turbo without issue. Newman cams come recommended also. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

I have all the pet manuals and I couldn’t find a different but a guy at piper told me that the s2 and s1 cams were different. This is very helpful information as I plan to get an ultimate road cam from piper. I would use the stock cam but it’s not much good after the previous owner let the belt snap… As for lifters I’m not entirely sure but will probably end up going with solid lifters . Any suggestion or advice is much appreciated as I really do need more education on this…
Cheers

I believe both Piper and Newman can make solid lifters. I use the ACM ones from Sweden, they were relatively inexpensive at under at under $150 per set, RD Spring in CA might also have them, he supplied my Chevy LS spring and retainer setup for the 931 head. You do have to use shims for valve clearance, I use ones from the Alfa 105(9mm) motor as they come in a wide range of sizes and cost about $6 each, Valve adjustments are a pain because the distributor and cam have to be removed but that's life. Some people say to get less expensive fixed thickness ones and have them surface ground to fit, butt as busy as most motor machinists are I find the Alfa system much quicker and cheaper.
I adjusted six valves on my race NA(barely modified) race car motor by swapping 4 around and buying 2 new ones, cost under $15.
Our method for initial adjustment was to assemble head with lifters and cam then measure for each. Shims showed up about 4 days later. _________________ Mike

Excuse the stupid questions I’m about to ask but are lifters and followers the same thing? I currently have new inner and outer oem springs on the way along with valve guides, valve seals, and new valves for the ones that got smashed when the belt snapped. Also do I have to get the valve seats cleaned up at a shop or how should I tackle those. Thank you for the help
Cheers

Yes lifters and cam followers are the same thing. If it is a NA motor having a shop do the valve is by far the best as they can go a 3 or 5 angle seat and also back cut the valves to help the flow a bit. _________________ Mike

Once again another dumb question but, assuming I had the unloaded head prepped at a shop and the seats done. Would I be able to do a three angle job myself or is this just worth taking it to a shop?

Just let the shop do it. Tooling up for the job is so much more
The 'seats' part is where they will apply the three angle's
There are some of us that do stuff like this ourselves but the effort and possibly money in the beginning can be crazy. _________________ 1980 931 since 1989
