|
|
I've been looking for a 924 for several months now and I finally brought one home.
The interior (minus the typical cracked dash) is in very good condition and the body is in great shape.
The car has sat for at least a year. The previous owner had issues with it leaking coolant and various electrical issues.
"1978 Porsche 924. 95% rust free starts but is leaking coolant and has possible electrical issue due to battery draining and gauges fluttering especially temp gauge. Lots of new parts. New oil pan gasket new battery and alternator new water pump and comes with new front pads and rotors. Body and floor is solid cones with parts car. "
Now that I have it home, its time to start a list and start checking things off.
I pulled the fuel sender and the inside of the tank looks great and there are no leaks. I'm plan on replacing the fuel filter and seeing what kind of flow I'm getting to the injectors.
Next will be a tune up plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor and check the condition of the timing belt.
From here I think I'll be ready to see if it runs. Any other advise on things to do before trying to start would be appreciated.
Here are some other issues I will need to address.
Body
The rear hatch glass is separating from the frame.
Electrical
Electric cut off switch has been added to negative battery cable (probably added to cut off battery drain)
The headlight motor isn't working, one light comes on and the high beam works.
Radiator fan is always running when the ignition is turned on. The fans have some re-wiring done that I need to dig into.
Windshield washers don't spray, I can hear the motor run but nothing comes out of the nozzles. I'm going to check the lines and nozzles for blockage.
Interior
levers on the heater/fan controls are cockeyed and don't function at all.
Thats it so far. I'll look into the brakes once I have it running.
Here are some photos.
Thanks folks! I look forward to learning and contributing to the community.

Skota,
Welcome to ownership. Nice looking NA with a turbo nose.
Leaking coolant sounds like a major issue. Don't bother trying to start it yet. Get a radiator test kit and pressurize the system. If the coolant leak is a hose or fitting, you've lucked out. If a head gasket, then you are in for some work.

Sounds good, I'll test that leak out first. |

Welcome and hooray! Nice car.
Sounds like you'll be tinkering a while.
About some of the minor points:
Hatch glass delamination has been reported by a member of the German P-Car forum to be fixable long-term without even trying to separate the glass from the frame, with a marine-grade polymer goo. Let me know if/when you're ready to tackle this and want more info.
Windshield washers: If the nozzles and lines prove clear of blockages but the lines are empty of washer fluid, the pump generally doesn't manage to fill them up. Try to fill them manually after checking the various non-return valves in the circuit and only then power up the pump - that may be all it takes to get the washers spraying again.
The headlight motor has its own relay which loves to unseat itself. May not be a biggie if you're lucky.
Let us know if you need help!

Thank you Eliza,
It should be a great project for our long Wisconsin winter.
I've been looking at the rear glass issue and saw a couple how-to topics on how to repair it. I'll be in touch when I get to it.
Great info on the washers! That makes sense.
I think the headlight motor issue is in the wiring. I'm going to print out full wiring diagrams from this link I found and will be tackling these things once I get larger issues taken care of.

Thanks Morghen,
Maybe 11x17 was overkill for the wiring diagrams, but it was only $.50 more per page

The coolant leak has been traced to a loose hose clamp at the water pump/heater pipe intersection.
The coolant hose on top of the thermostat doesn't have a bleed port like I've seen on available and shown in the manual.
The timing belt tensioner was making a little noise at first start up but that quickly went away. There are a few different timing belt/pulley kits available, are there any I should avoid or one someone would recommend? Theres also an adjustable DIAL-IN-CAMS cam gear installed. |

We now have working radiator fans and it was finally time to get it on the ground and go for its first drive. It was really nice to see the car off the jack stands and on four wheels.
Here are a few of my first impressions.
After getting it off the jack stands I was reminded how low the front end is. I was wondering if the car has lowering springs on the front. I put a level on the door sills and the car is slightly raked forward.
The first bit of driving was just back and forth on the driveway testing the brakes, they haven't been used in more than a year. The rear wheels are not easy to spin so I'll need to look into this (brake, wheel bearings, ebrake...). A system bleed on a closer look at things is next.
The steering is heavier than I expected. It has 185 tires on it and I was expecting it to be a bit lighter. Not a bad thing, I think I may like it with more driving.
The cars balance and the way the suspension works is fantastic! Going through rolling sections of pavement at speed made me want to do it again and again. Just fantastic!
I knew I was in for a treat with this car I cant wait to get in and drive it some more!

I started working on the brake last week and planned on just adjusting the pads in the rear. This quickly snowballed and had a bit of a setback with a stripped caliper bolt on the front. Things should get bolted back up this weekend.
On a more positive note. Euro bumpers arrived and I did a test fit on the rear.

So it's been a long time since I've posted an update. But for good reason, the 924 has been my daily for most of the summer with a few longer trips and early Sunday morning drives with a buddy and his 914.
Theres some things to tackle over the winter again including
1. still haven't re-sealed the rear hatch
2.Install the alternator cooling shroud/tubing (not sure how yet, its not an original alternator and the studs arent there)
2a. I have a used bosch alternator, may try to get this working
3. replace rear shift bushings
4. maybe a new exhaust
Thanks,
Steve
