Hey all, my first post post here so go easy on me, I have a good condition 1985.5 944, but I'm not a fan of the 944 powerplant, luckily I just picked a 1980 931 with a crusty shell but a good running motor, has anyone done this swap before? I know this was the first year of the Audi Transaxle, but I've heard there's like different torque tube sizes and such? Any advice would be great, or a link to a thread because I haven't found one yet.

EDIT: I just figured out it's actually a 1982 931! Just looked at the title I guess I need this guy to write a new bill of sale

Interesting..
Is the 931 a 5 lug or a 4 lug?

It's a 5 lug with an Audi Transaxle

I don't think 016 trans was stock in 1980. More likely a Getrag unit.

In answer to your query, I don't recall anyone swapping a 2.0 into the 2.5 platform, so there may not be a thread.

So you want to reverse engineer a 944 tub, wiring harness, dash, subframe, clutch pack, exhaust, blah blah blah in order to install an unknown 931 engine that "runs good"?

I think someone is a little confused on the relationship between 944s and 924s

If I recall correctly, someone here described installing a 944 engine into a 924 tub. Probably a lot less retro fit than the other way around. And not turbo related.

Man if you were half as good a mechanic as you were a comic you'd probably want to stick to leasing

In all seriousness though, I didn't come to listen to the elderly crack wise. I'm really just interested to see if anyone has done this before (it looks like they haven't) and if anyone has any tips to smooth out the process, as I understand it pretty much all I have to do is get switched power to my ignition, fuel pump, and to the CIS, and everything else is bolt in, also the 931 has a new fuel system with an external electric fuel pump. Is there anything I'm missing? If someone has a write up on the most effective way to wire everything it would be appreciated

Everything is NOT bolt in. You have to do some cutting and welding.

"How to Get Favors from Strangers. . .The Rhode Island Way"

If you understand it is all bolt in, then bolt it all in, and please let us know how it goes.

Everything is possible. Sometimes you have to ignore folks saying it can't be done and just pave your own path. Unlikely you will find a blow by blow 'how to' on t'internet.

Engine + mounts, TT, torsion bar carrier, gearbox swap between the two, some welding of 931 engine mounts onto 944 shell, some splicing of wiring. Simples. What is there to go wrong?

I didn't say it couldn't be done, just that I couldn't recall a thread here detailing the process.
