Hey folks,
Just returned from our New Jersey LeMons race and had a few problems. One was a harmonic balancer that sheered off. That sent us home early as there wasn’t one anyplace nearby.
The other problem we encountered was oil flowing out of the dipstick tube like a small lava flow from an active volcano.
Could the crank case breather be clogged? Are the rings that worn out?
Is there any way to unclog the crankcase breather tube without dropping the oil pan?
Drain oil then blow compressed air through hose?
Any and all suggestion will be appreciated.

The first question is what kind of car is it? A 924 doesn't have a harmonic balancer but spitting oil from the dipstick and clogged breathers are not unusual. The 924S/944 with the 2.5 motor does have harmonic balancers.
I only know about the 924NA. A compression test is the first order of business but my good motor spread oil all over the engine bay at a track day. I helped my dipstick spitting problem by adding another piece of felt to the dipstick seal and bending the curved tension spring of the dipstick out to make it fit tighter. I did that and at driver school that stopped the leaking.
The breather is famous for getting clogged as many had a fine screen in them and it is a bear to get out and probably be ruined if you get it out. It is on the driver side at the rear of the block below the intake manifold. It can be really tough even if the block is out of the car. I'd suggest draining the oil then getting a gallon of diesel or mineral spirits(paint thinner) and pouring back into the pan thru the breather tube letting it drain back into a catch pan. It will also clean out the oil pan. Repeat that several times. A big blast of compressed air can help also. New breathers were available from Porsche a year or so ago.
I'm considering adding a second breather/filter to my track car at the valve cover but not sure how to set it up. Those little filters that are used are fairly expensive and then there is the drain back and hood clearance issue. _________________ Mike
