Whenever I talk about my 931 not having a Porsche engine I always say it’s a Porsche head on a diesel block and crank..
I am quite a modest person so I always have to say “well it’s not like it’s a 911, it’s not worth a lot, half of it is vw parts so it’s pretty cheap a lot of the time” etc to downplay.. also their is not much sense in explaining my mods because it’s just a bunch of technical jargon most wont understand.. I do say it is fast now though and leave it at that..
I don’t talk about my cars and things much because I hate to brag but I like to have nice stuff for myself.. |
I dont think Im bragging when asking if the Porsche 924 has a van engine... if it does it does not make any difference to me or any other owner of a 924 since if it did no one would have one.... |

I mean that the stigma of having a truck or van engine is not such a negative thing here, normally it is a good thing if you have a truck engine in your car..
People are putting truck engines in their 944s and 951s all the time.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

I am being rather sarcastic saying that the 924 has a van engine,,, but that is what is said... even the GT40 has a van engine as far as Im informed. |
When did you last hear that the Sierra and Escort Cosworth have a transit engine? Same Pinto blocks....... _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

This is a stupid discussion if there is any ranking implied.
For historical relevance yes it makes sense to discuss.
These childish looking down labels come from people not worth listening to.
Cost reduction measures were and still are ridiculous...i work in automotive and you wont believe to what extent the car manufacturers and their suppliers go to save a penny.
Using the same engine block as other types and makes of vehicles is not a shame, its reality, we are not seeing the oceans of shared parts between so many cars. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The other argument that makes me crazy is the "not a real Porsche" thing. Like the 356 and 911 were some totally original design and not tied to VW.
They were all born from the mind of Dr. Porsche _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

| I think that the 924 is the only engine with crossflow head. Isn't it ? |

Didn't I WRITE that the GT40 has a TRUCK engine????... Nothing wrong with it.. same with the Sierra or Escort Cosworth... having a Transit engine doesn't bother me at all..in my country we consider them to have transit blocks,, maybe you don't in the UK for some reason...but they do ,, thats the honest truth If The 924 has an engine developed from a Van engine and it works.. thats good..Wont make a difference to me.. if someone doesn't 'like' my comments ,, its their problem... after all isn't this a forum where anyone can say something and where info is gathered .. being what ever info that may be?

Excuse me Morghen ta but I think I had a 924 when you were a child probably. if you consider a discussion as stupid coming from people not worth listening to, you shouldn't have commented maybe??? I wouldn't....If the 924 has an engine developed from a van engine I don't see anything wrong in that and am not in any way offended by it...if anyone saying that offends you in any way form or manner then I advise you not to read it .. but trying to go around it just because it is would be imho childish, foolish and most of all idiotic... All I asked was 'WHO DESIGNED THE 924 ENGINE?'... if anyone considers that as a stupid question then he has a problem. The 924 is what it is and not what we think it is. |

You misunderstood, i was not referring to you or your question.
I was talking about those people who look down on the 924 because it has a "van engine".
Of course its ok even if it has a "van engine"...it shares parts with other cars and the engine block was originally designed for a turbo diesel small earth mover.
The 924 engine was developed by Porsche using existing parts that were adapted and modified for improved performance over the original concept.
So the 924 engine has 125hp and 168Nm, has a crossflow fuel injected head, runs a 9.3:1 compression ratio, has a bore and stroke that you normally find in a sport engine, has bigger main bearings like you would find in a sport engine as well as a decently sporty valve train compared to the "van engine".
That van engine that shares parts and partly the design with the 924 is carburated engine with low compression, considerably lower power output, lazy cam and it is in no way designed for a sports car, the engine looks similar but is in no way the same when it comes to its performance.
The 924 engine is not impressive by today's standards but it wasnt bad by the standards of 1976 when the 911 engine produced 150hp. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The LT van has a sports car engine!
The engine has a few good design elements that makes it very stout and some that is not that good for a performance engine, like the head.
It's still a good head for a standard engine, but kind of a dead end for NA performance enhancements.
Over all its not a bad engine, a little more care with balancing parts it would have the refinement that I think lacks and should be present in a Porsche. |

Morghen in short I dont care if it has a bicycle engine.. I have 1 running 924 which I am to use on club road rally 'as slow as you can go events'... its been given the Carrera Panamericana look or else i believe it has myself anyway with a few personalized stickers and equipment here and there,, I also have a Webbered version lightened with cam etc for track/hillclimb use only when its finished and I have a non running part car from which I have taken some parts to save the other 2. If they keep up with certain cars I would be more than happy. The Road rally car certainly can anyway and when considering I own far more modern ,better ,faster cars than the 924 , it happens to be one of my favourites toys, maybe its because I made it look the way it does .. who knows.. |
