A good price would be $300 (basic clutch kit with pressure plate, clutch disc, and throwout bearing). Some of the Porsche Dealers were selling them at that price around a year ago.
I bought my new clutch parts from a Seller at the Pomona Swapmeet last year. I got all new Porsche branded parts including: (2) clutch discs, (1) pressure plate, and (1) throwout bearing) for $80. At the same swapmeet (different day), I bought a "completer" set of clutch parts for $10 (Haynes 944 Service Manual, (2) shift fork bearings, pilot bearing, and guide tube).
At times, some people on the RennList and on eBay have sold the individual parts at prices that would allow you to collect a whole set of parts for less than $300. I have seen new throwout bearings sold for $25-$40, and I know where there is a new SACHS pressure plate (in-the-box) you could get for about $125-$150.
Be careful that you are comparing apples to applies when pricing clutch kits. Some Aftermarket Parts Suppliers assemble clutch kits with the other parts that you are going to need, and others advertise and include only the three basic parts.
Because the labor cost to replace the clutch is so high, it is customary to replace the associated waer/mechanical parts at the same time. A complete clutch replacement set should include: the pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, transmission mainshaft guide tube, and (2) shift fork bearings.
Inspect the shift fork carefully while you are in there. There have been some reported failures of the shift fork from sudden breakage or bending. If the fingers on yours are heavily worn, or show any signs of bending, I would replace it as well. I believe that the price of a new one is around $75-$100.
The transmission mainshaft guide tubes sell new, for between $15-$30, don't buy a used one. I have seen them made from different materials, and of different quality levels (materials and workmanship). I would lean towards a genuine original Porsche part (I think they are cadmium plated or chromed, some others are painted). The shift fork bearings go for between $15-$20 each, and the pilot bearing should go between $10-$20. |
