I was just wondering, so I dont get ripped off, what is the normal price for a full tune up on a 88 924S. Just inside the engine, such as timing belt, and all other belts that need to be done, and timing....what else should be done w/ the maintenance? Thanks, because it's about time for the car to have a full tune up, but I dont have a shop or the right tools to mess w/ the engine. _________________ My Old Porsche Thats Sold

Lets see...it's been about a year since I did mine, and I didn't have a FULL tune up done. but full tune up includes (I think) timing belt, Compensating shaft belt, new water pump (should be done when the belts are) Alternator belt, Power steering pump belt, spark plugs, distributor cap, distributor rotor, new plugs, new fluids (i.e. coolant, oil, power steering, brake, and trans). ya... so, I just had the belts done, and the coolant. it cost about $500.00. so it'll be expensive. It's mostly labor. _________________ Porschephile at home=Carnut 280 |

A good price for the just the belts is $500. Really it's the labor that gets you, so as long as you're having the belts done you're best off to replace anything that could possibly need replacing, otherwise you're looking at many hundreds in labor for a relatively inexpensive part.

| Search Gohim's posts, he's got a pretty good list of what needs to be done. |

I don't replace the distributor cap, rotor, or plug wires, unless they are worn-out or damaged.
Normal 30K mile or 3-year service would include: timing belt, balance shaft belt, rollers, pulleys, front oil seals, water pump, and if it hasn't been done in a while, the oil cooler seals.
The oil and filter should be replaced after the front of engine service is completed, and the engine restarted and run for 15-20 minutes, to remove whatever you break loose into the oil, during the service.
Since the timing is electronic, it can be checked, but there is nothing to adjust.
The coolant should be replaced if it is discolored, contaminated, or smells funny.
The cost of a full set of radiator and heater hoses is ugly, and they should be very carefully visually inspected for defects, and squeezed to check for hardening or deterioration if you are going to take a chance and keep them.
The heater valve should be inspected, and replaced as necessary. |
